How To Choose The Right Artistic Wooden Urns Or Other Urns For Your Needs

By Gary Hill

If you have recently lost a loved one and have decided to have that person cremated you are likely looking for a vessel in which to place their ashes. While many people choose stone or metal vessels, there are also artistic wooden urns that may be right for your needs. Here is what you need to know about these items.

Many people are surprised to find that an urn is simply a box or canister where ashes can be deposited. Some can be very simple while others are more ornate. In recent years, there are even an increasing number of urns that are designed to hold the ashes of animals such as cats or dogs.

One thing to think about is where the urn will be kept. If you are keeping it inside, the material it is made out of will be less important than if the vessel will be outside and exposed to weather. If you are choosing a style that is made out of delicate material such as wood or is decorated with paint rather than with carving may mean that the vessel begins to show wear and tear much more quickly than you would like.

If remains are being kept inside, you have a much wider selection of vessels to choose from. You may want to look at a material such as wood since this can be warmer looking and feel more inviting than a metal version might.

You may be surprised to learn that there are many ways of constructing wooden urns. One of the most popular is to carve a piece of wood on a lathe. This is a process known as turning. It is then decorated further using other methods. Sometimes the wood is stained or painted. Another method of constructing a wooden urn is to join separate pieces of wood together to form a vessel that looks like a box or chest. Either of these options can be beautiful in their own way.

If you want an urn to be artistically decorated there are several different ways that this can be accomplished. You may want to think about whether you want the decoration to be on the surface or one that has the decoration built right into the wood itself. This will help you narrow down the choices that are available so that it is easier to make your final selection.

If you are choosing wood, you will want to make sure that you pick a finish that will work well with other wooden items in your home. You can either choose one that matches other wood finishes exactly or one that will compliment your other furnishings but still allows your urn to stand out in a very classy way.

Although you may be able to find various options at funeral homes and crematoriums you may need to look elsewhere if you have something very specific in mind. There are websites that you may want to check out as well since these have more selection and are usually offering vessels at more reasonable prices as well.
