By Peter Kelly

Training of dogs is generally the activity of making these animals learn how to respond to Commands and also teaching them to perform different actions that might be unnatural for them. This activity can be traced back to the ages of the roman kingdom. Great developments in dog training Fairfield NJ for domestic life were made in the 1950s.

Training of dogs in the ancient ages can be traced back to the period between 127-116 B. C. Whereby a dog training manual was recorded by Marcus Varo, a farmer, and it offered various tips on how to train puppies so that they could learn the process of livestock herding. This record not only confirmed how dog coaching was established then, but also on the need to train these important animals early enough.

W. N. Hutchison in 1848 also wrote a book that talked about coaching of dogs to assist in hunting activities. The author was against punishment as a form of dog coaching and instead he insisted on the use of reward-based coaching for these pets. His comments were later on supported by Forest and Stream magazine when they published an article that that insisted on rewarding and praising the dogs after any successful hunting venture.

Germany also enjoyed the services of these trained pets in both the First and the Second World War. After a series of researches on the importance of dog coaching and the numerous activities that dogs can assist in when trained, Konrad Most finally initiated the coaching of police dogs in Germany. His works led to his appointment as the head of Experimental Institute for Armed Forces Dogs during the Second World War.

For dogs, learning is always achieved through any interactions with the environment done through different channels. The first channel is classical conditioning whereby the dog associates two different stimuli. Modification of dog behavior can also be achieved through sensitization, and the learning process is non-associative. The last method of learning by dogs is the operant conditioning, where an antecedent and its consequence are associated.

Currently, there exists a variety of methods that all aim at modifying the behavior of dogs, with each method having its own merits and demerits. The common coaching methods include negative reinforcements, clicker training, Koehler method, relationship based coaching among others. All these methods are usually successful when the trainer understands the personality and attributes of the dog, offers punishments and reinforcement at the right time, and finally when the trainer regularly communicates the instructions to the dog.

Dogs can be trained to handle specialized duties like law enforcement, rescuing activities, performing searches, entertainment, hunting and so on. The American Kennel Club initiated obedience trials in 1935 and they insisted on the three basic commands which included lie down, which instructed the dog to remain the current position, basked which ordered the dog to go to a particular place, and heel which means come with me.

Dog coaching requires the use of behavior analysis that applies the use of various environmental events so as to modify the way a dog behaves so that the dog can assist in carrying out various tasks or just effective participation in domestic livelihoods. A trained pet dog is everybodys favorite, and dog coaching can be an interesting hobby.
