They are frequently trained to help out the blind. They also act as therapy dogs and may perform some detection and screening for law enforcement and various other agencies.

As far as their origins go, they first came from Canada, although much of their history can be explored later on. When it comes right down to weight, they are not extremely large, although they have a good size on them as well. The males are a bit heavier, but not by much. The heaviest on average would be forty kilograms, just five kilograms heavier than the females.

Concerning height, the males stand a bit taller at sixty three centimeters or twenty five inches the most, meanwhile the females follow at sixty centimeters or twenty four inches. These statistics indicate that there is not much of an average size difference between the genders. Historically, this breed has its ancestors traced all the way back to Newfoundland, which is currently somewhere in a province in Canada. The breed that started it all would be the St. Johns Water dog. It emerged initially through ad hoc breeding, which were conducted by the early settlers of the island sometime during the sixteenth century.

Of that specific breed, its forebears are now lost to history. But, it is highly likely that they were a mixture of English, Portuguese and Irish breeds. The Newfoundland breed is the result between Mastiffs and St. Johns. Such things were brought over by the Portuguese fishermen, for the purpose of reeling or retrieving nets from the water.

When it comes to the colors, these creatures are typically registered in three colors. One would be black, then comes yellow and finally, there is chocolate. There are some that are sold as silver pure bred variants. However, some cases are currently being disputed in regards to their so called purity.

Concerning the yellow, some of it may fall down to a white like shade, thereby explaining the white Labradors for sale thing.
