Trustworthy Pomeranian Breeders Should Be Chosen With Care

By Tiffany Gill

The Pomeranian is a type of dog that is quite small. Such dogs have fluffy coats, and look somewhat like a fox. In most cases, they are intelligent, energetic and affectionate. However, Pomeranians are highly independent dog, more so than any other toy breed. They are easy to teach tricks to, as well as train, and have the curious nature and desire to learn. When looking for Pomeranian breeders, clients must make their selections carefully.

The breed was developed in Prussia, and originated from a dog called the Spitz, the latter of which were frequently used in European countries to herd sheep. The first Pomeranians were quite large and often weighed as much as thirty pounds. However, in the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria, who desired a smaller size of this dog began breeding them down. Currently, Pomeranians can be found weighing an average of four or five pounds.

The breed is a great show dog and companion. This is due to the fact that these dogs are easy to train, as previously mentioned. They are also very agile and excel at performing tricks.

Such dogs typically have long hair, full coats, and brown eyes that are almond shaped. The color of the dog's coat is generally brown, white, green, orange, black, or red. Their tails usually curl in a gentle, fan-like fashion. Pomeranians shed on a regular basis; however, twice a year their undercoat is shed.

Such dogs grow to an average height of seven inches to one foot. Between 3 and 7 pounds is the range into which their weight will typically fall. However, they become overweight quickly if they consume too much food, and it is difficult for them to shed the excess pounds. This is why keeping such dogs on a well-balanced diet is beneficial to their owners, as well as to the dogs. Overfeeding them is never wise at any time.

A Pomeranian can live as long as 15 years. Daily exercise is important, due to the fact that this breed is highly energetic. It is also important to avoid tangles and mats in there for by properly trimming and combing their coats on a regular basis. Dogs of this type are at a higher risk for skin issues, heart problems, infections, and dislocated knees. The latter affliction frequently happens when the dogs are playing and try to leap higher in the air than their delicate frames allow.

For unknown reasons, this dog breed tends to lose its teeth earlier than other canines classified as toy breeds. This is why most veterinarians suggest that they consume dry food regularly. Baby Pomeranians are quite fragile, and therefore need careful nursing if they are to survive. Such dogs may develop bald spots as they age, but this is not a sign of illness and generally considered normal.

When choosing a breeder, it is essential for one to review various options before making a final decision. This is because there are both reputable and shady Pomeranian breeders who conduct business on a regular basis. For this reason, it is important for one to carefully research the background of anyone from whom he or she is considering purchasing such a dog. Due to their energetic and loving nature, such dogs make an excellent pet, and therefore should be considered by anyone who wishes to add such an animal to his or her household.
