Understanding Vancouver Veterinary Profession And Practice

By Patricia Miller

Medical specialists whose specialty is in diagnosing, preventing and treating health conditions that prevail in animals are referred to as veterinarians. These medical practitioners handle both wild and domestic animals in their practice. The term vet is the colloquial for the word veterinarian and is in common use. Veterinary surgeon or physician are the other names used in this profession. In Vancouver veterinary refers to the place of work for veterinarians.

In most countries the practice of veterinarians as well as the name are usually regulated or protected by the law. That means that unless one is licensed to work as a veterinarian, they cannot use the term or engage in any activities pertaining to the work of vets. As such, it is often a criminal offense for one to refer to themselves as vets or to undertake any activity pertaining to the profession if they are not trained and licensed to do so.

The term veterinarian was first appeared in 1946 in a print written by someone named Thomas Browne. The word is a Latin word that translates to working animals in the English language. In North America and other countries that use American English, the term veterinarian is used more commonly. On the other hand, in countries that are part of the Commonwealth of Nations the term veterinary surgeon is used more commonly. The same is true in countries that formed part of the British Empire.

The settings in which veterinarians work vary, but commonly include animal hospitals and private clinics. These practitioners also have a chance to specialize according to animal types and size. Those whose specialty is in small animals commonly work in offices and clinic environments. On the other hand, those whose specialty is in large animals work on ranches and farms.

Veterinarians are assisted with team or other specialists. The team comprises of Veterinarian Technicians and Technologists among others. The team is supervised by the vet in handling various tasks such as emergency procedures and medical tests. Veterinarians may also secure employment in various facilities including food safety inspection facilities, humane societies, diagnostic facilities, military, animal control facilities, wildlife facilities, biomedical companies, and companies that produce foods and drugs.

To work as a specialist in veterinary medicine in the US requires one to have a degree in Veterinary Medicine. The abbreviation DVM is often used. Students are required to have a pre-veterinary degree in courses such as Physiology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Statistics, and Genetics for them to gain access into doctorate programs. The pre-veterinary degree courses often take three to four years to complete.

Several duties are entailed in the job. Some of them include treating and dressing wounds, prescribing medication, testing diseases, vaccinating against diseases, diagnosing and treating conditions, examining health conditions, and euthanizing animals. Workers are also required to operate various medical machines like MRI and x-ray machines.

The amount a vet earns in a month or per year depends on various factors. Some of these factors include employer, location, experience, and specialization. New entrants into the field often lack experience and connections, which makes them to earn lower salaries compared to those with several years of experience.
