4 Dental Care Tips For Dogs, From Assisi

By Robin Setser

To say that a dog's teeth matter would be an understatement. However, many pet owners don't realize that if the proper methods aren't taken, oral conditions can arise. This is why it's important to know how to maintain your dog's dental hygiene, which is something that Assisi and other authorities in pet care can help with. Here are 4 of the most useful pointers that you would be wise to put into action, if you haven't already.

One of the things to know about dental care, as it relates to dogs, is that it takes time for the animal to get used to it. Keep in mind that brushing teeth isn't exactly normal for canines, which means that they might snap or bite if they become uncomfortable. This is why it's recommended that you brush your dog's teeth quickly at first, slowly increasing the time until your dog becomes more comfortable. This is one of the ways to keep your dog's teeth in good shape.

One of the most important things to know about brushing a dog's teeth is the type of toothpaste used. Specifically, you shouldn't use a product that will be unsafe for your pet to swallow, which all but takes toothpaste for people out of the equation. If you're stumped on what to use, make it a point to visit your local pet store. More likely than not, they can offer a specific type of toothpaste that will be safe for all types of dogs.

Another dental hygiene tip to consider is that dry food typically works best. For those who commonly feet their pets wet food, it stands a greater chance of sticking to the gums and around the teeth. What this does, in the long run, is increase the risk of gum disease, which creates additional problems for the teeth by proxy. Dry dog food is more beneficial, in the oral sense, but consult your veterinarian before making any sporadic changes to your pet's regimen.

Lastly, you should invest in a couple of chew toys for your dog to gnaw on. While these are great for keeping your pet occupied, there are secondary health benefits to be aware of as well. When your dog is able to chew on these toys, the teeth become stronger, which lowers the risk of disease as a result. Do not think that chew toys are simply playthings; they are actually more beneficial than anyone might assume.
