5 Considerations for Selecting Girl Cat Names

By Felicity McGrath

Don't take the responsibility of naming your female cat lightly! Cats have ears and brains, therefore if you give your cat a stupid name, she will be incorporating this name into her identity for the rest of her life. What's more, you don't want your cat to be teased by other cats, so giving her a noble and girly name is definitely the way to go. Don't have a joke at your cat's expense when it comes to naming her!

Tip 1 - A name is for life! When you name your cat, the name is going to stick for the cat's entire life. Even if a new owner (heaven forbid the cat needs one, but it does happen from time to time) gives the cat a new name, the cat won't be able to respond and will naturally become depressed. Think about the longevity of the name from this perspective but also from the perspective of changing cultures. A 1980s cat name, after all, won't be the same as a name for the 2010s.

Tip 2 - Don't be ironic with colors. If your cat is black, it deserves a black name. If your cat is white, it deserves a white sounding name (I don't mean black and white in the sense of African versus Caucasian - I am speaking strictly about the colors here of course). Don't be led into the dark side way of thinking where you name your ginger cat "Greenie" or your black cat "Milk". It isn't funny and it doesn't help your cat's self esteem at all, trust me on that.

Tip 3 - Research the history of the name before you apply it. How embarrassing it would be to name your cat something only to realise later the word is an adaptation of the ancient Hebrew for the word "poo" or similar. It's important to be thorough in your examination of the etymology of your cat's name before you apply it to your cat. Cats are very smart and you never know what they'll learn - especially when they go roaming around at night.

Tip 4 - Effort is caring. Do not name your cat "cat"... seriously. This is a heinous crime against the feline race and is akin to calling your human baby "Homo" (short for homosapien) or your baby giraffe "Giraffe" - get me? Every time your cat hears "cat" thrown at it by way of affectionate or aggressive name-calling, by you and by everyone else in her life, she will remember that you didn't give a flying cat litter about her when she was a kitten and gave her the most uncreative and boring name imaginable. Get me?

Tip 5 - Research, research, research! Feedback is critical but not just from anyone. You want to hear what the people who will actually be in your girl cat's life think about the names you have selected for the short-list. It will be pretty clear which ones are bad and which ones are good, but make sure you remember the tips above because it's easy to give in to peer pressure and if they're all telling you to name your female cat "cat", tell them where they can go.

Proper preparation prevents poor performance! Never forget this and put as much effort into naming your new cat as you would with naming a new human... this is a very serious activity and make sure you treat it that way. Your cat will thank you for it.
