Intriguing Information On The Raccoon Species

By Adriana Noton

The continent of North America is home to a fascinating creature that resides in the forest. They are cunning creatures, which are considered to be pest in urban areas. There is more to them than what people are led to believe. Scientist classify them as Mammalia of the Carnivora order. There are many species of a raccoon, which will be described below.

The first species, which is known as a crab eater is found in Latin American countries, such as Argentina and a few others. What separates it from the rest is its diet. Being that its habitat is close to beaches and lakes, it prefers to consume crabs. It also will hunt other shellfish if they are available. Its size can be described as small and thin.

A rather unique type of coon called the ring tail has a habitat in the forest of Southern California and Mexico. They are very agile and efficient hunters. There diets consist of other small animals and reptiles. Even birds can become prey when these coons are lurking. Their memory gives them the ability to remember solutions to problems when hunting.

The Tres Marias species is only found on the islands of Islas Marias. A rare mammal indeed, it has been classified as endangered due to hunters in the local area. What separates it from the other species is its angular shaped head and large body. No efforts are being made to protect it from hunters and if this continues, it will become extinct.

Coons are also found in the Bahamas also. These tropical creatures are similar to the other species, but are smaller in size. Scientist refer to this small size in animals as dwarfism. Although scientist have collected a large amount of data on the coons, they still are not sure of their origins. Some have suggested that they came from an island 1200 kilometers away.

The Barbados species once could be found on the island of Barbados. An unfortunate accident in 1996 led to the extinction of the species. Early reports describe the animal as being small, with dark and consistent hair covering the face. Like its Bahaman counterpart, it shares a resemblance to the Guadeloupe species.

Scientist have done studies to determine the behavior of coons. They're mental abilities are very astonishing. Test were done to see if they could open locks. On each try they got it right and this explains they're cunning tendencies in residential areas. They have a photographic memory, which allows them to remember past solutions to problems.

The coon is an intelligent creature, which deserves more credit than what has been given to it. Its mental abilities and agility are unmatched in the animal kingdom. Although hot tempered, most aggression is only limited to mating seasons. Groups of four are common and females have been known to isolate themselves to nurture their young. There are certain species, which are being hunted to the point of extinction. The best course of action to prevent this is to raise awareness about the situation. Enthusiast can get involved so that the raccoon species is not exterminated completely.
