Sleeping - One Need Not Consider It Difficult Anymore

By Alison Heath

About thirty-two million Americans, or one eighth of the population, suffer from insomnia, thus making it our leading sleep disorder. Those with insomnia, who are often called insomniacs, suffer from difficulty in getting some sleep or remaining asleep for long periods of time. Insomnia can have many symptoms, but to narrow them to a select few, these would be stress, anxiety, depression, tension, muscle pain, a "wild" imagination or even bipolar disorder. According to specialists, people usually suffer from insomnia if they are plagued by personal problems such as issues in the work place, financial troubles and an inability to "perform" in bed, among others. In addition, one can suffer from insomnia if he or she loses a family member or friend.

There are three specific types of insomnia, namely, transient insomnia which can last from one night to several weeks. Minor cases of stress and anxiety or jet lag are the main causes of this type of insomnia, also called intermittent sleeplessness. Another type of sleeplessness is called acute insomnia, which is much worse and could last for as long as three weeks to as long as six months. The last type of sleeping disorder is called chronic insomnia where a person can suffer from sleeplessness every single night.

People with sleeping problems need not allow their condition to rob them of energy and peace of mind. The condition of sleeplessness can be dealt with in a number of ways, and an individual can try sleeping pills as a way to feel sleepy and eventually get some shut-eye. Ramelteon is one of the most predominant sleeping aids, and this is usually marketed under the brand name Rozerem.

While sleeping pills are effective on different levels, it must be stressed that they are only to be taken if a person suffers from a genuine case of insomnia. Sleeping aids must only be ingested once prescribed by the sufferer's trusted health care professional. Some prescribed sedative drugs have the potential to cause dependence. These sleeping pills can be addictive if taken for long periods of time without the approval of a doctor.

Sleeping pills are just one form of dealing with sleep disorders, but people can do so many other things, such as making sure they maintain a balanced diet, maintaining a regular schedule for sleep and reducing their afternoon intake of caffeine, or reducing their caffeine intake completely, regardless of the time. Sleeping is more than just biological in nature - it is also a psychological requirement for all individuals. Some of the things a person can do to facilitate the nightly process of sleep would be avoiding stress, intense work in the evenings as well as avoiding work or family-related contretemps. There are some individuals who do their exercise in the afternoon or early evening, which gives them an "adrenaline rush" of sorts. Because these people become more energetic in the evening, the simple process of "catching some zs" becomes extremely difficult.

Sleeping problems can also be reduced or eliminated in the simplest of ways, such as the following. The process of sleeping becomes more welcome and comfortable if one takes the time out to ensure that his or her pillows and mattresses are conducive to sleeping. Sleep becomes more powerful and prominent if one's bedroom is designed in such a way that relaxation becomes second nature. One can get a good night's sleep with the preternatural feeling of relaxation facilitated by a relaxing room ambiance, thus making sleep just as easy as counting sheep.
