Dog Training Tips To Help You And Your Pet

By Jerome I. Hill

Your dog is your family and it's okay to be stuck on figuring out friendly methods of training him or her. The following article will shed some light on some simple dog training tricks and tips that you can use to your benefit. Education is the key to success and educating yourself on how to train your pooch is the first step to take.

When training a dog to a leash it is important to keep the leash loose. Dogs are often eager to explore new territory when they get the opportunity to go for a walk. Because of their eagerness they will tend to strain on the limits of leash. The savvy owner will discourage this behavior, instead encouraging his or her pet to walk with some slack in the leash.

In order to properly train your dog you must understand how your actions affect your dog. Self awareness is vital if you want to ensure success with training your dog. If you do not understand how your actions affect others, there is no way you can have success with training your dog.

Make sure your dog's diet is appropriate for him. If your dog is a lazy dog who likes to lounge around all day, you don't want to give him the high protein food a dog who herds sheep would receive. This can cause problems and high vet bills down the road.

If you have an older dog, get a nice bed made of memory foam to ease the stress on old bones. It's also good to get a bed with a Mylar backing to help older dogs to stay nice and warm. A removable synthetic fleece cover, will also add extra padding and warmth for older dogs.

If your dogs are big and tough and young and go through beds as if they grow on trees, look for low cost alternatives. Use your imagination to come up with sofa cushions, comforters from the thrift store or garage sales, cast off pillows and other things that you don't mind having destroyed. Your dog will probably outgrow his bed destroying phase, and it's not worth it to get upset about it and spend a fortune on dog beds!

If you are trying to train a teething puppy not to chew on your clothing or belongings, give it an appropriate item on which to chew. Teething puppies have an instinctive need to chew, in order to relieve the pain. However, don't give your puppy old shoes or clothing, as they will learn that those items are okay to chew on.

Never yell at a barking dog. While a barking dog is sure to raise your frustration level, resist the urge to yell at them. Dogs do not understand that you are yelling at them, and often associate your raised voice as you joining in the fun of barking. If your dog is barking, calmly distract them with a toy or treat, and when the barking stops, give them their prize.

With all of the information you have just read, you should have a better idea about how you want to train your dog, now. The only way you are going to see success with your dog is if you actually apply the knowledge you have learned. Try to the best of your ability to do just that and you should see results.
