Restriction On Having Hedgehogs As Pets

By Alan Stables

In some places, having hedgehogs as pets is simply not allowed. Some areas will prohibit the possession of exotic animals, such as in California, which refuses hedgehogs as they absent from their list of accepted exotic animals. While some areas refuse them for no stated reasons, others exclude them since they could not survive or upset the native population of animals.

Windsor, Ontario and Langley, British Columbia are the only places in Canada that do not accept owners and breeders of hedgehogs. The cold weather negatively affects the animals and make then more subject to catch diseases or become ill. This is why people should rely on backup generators to maintain a moderate room temperature. Drastic temperature can put them in false hibernation cycles, shock, and even death. Should they escape, they would not be able to survive given the extreme cold.

The United States has an interesting array of reasons to deny the ownership or breeding of hedgehogs. In Tennessee it is legal to own them, but if you own more than three breeding age females, a USDA license is required, regardless of whether you intend to breed them or not.

Being a breeder requires a USDA license. Paperwork must also be signed by persons wishing to rescue an abandoned hedgehog stating it will not be used for breeding purposes due to unknown origins even though most do not go to the expense to neuter these rescues.

In Pennsylvania, hedgehogs are strictly prohibited. Breaking this law means fines for the owner and euthanasia for the animal. In states like Nebraska, owning hedgehogs is allowed although not in Douglas County. Breeders are allowed in Georgia if they are registered although ownership of hedgehogs as pets if not allowed. You should search all Federal, State, County, and City level laws before deciding to acquire one of those animals.

The International Hedgehog Association actively monitors breeders and rescuers and attempts to register hedgehogs and track bloodlines. This is to maintain clean bloodlines since it is no longer legal to import African Pygmy Hedgehogs into the United States.

Since hedgehogs have tendencies to get bone cancers, they should not be used as breeding stock. The objective is to breed out genetic diseases. A common such disease is Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, which is comparable to Muscular Sclerosis in humans.

Given their differences, it is important to study all the appropriate regulations in your areas before trying to acquire any hedgehogs as pets.
