Tips On Caring For Nursing Uniforms

By Adriana Noton

Chlorine bleach is a known disinfectant and whitener for laundry. It can still be used on most white fabrics. Most scrubs are not white, though, and so they need to be laundered differently. Here are some tips for getting these important items thoroughly clean, while still keeping the colors and patterns looking good.

A uniform is typically worn in large part to identify the persons in a certain profession. The nursing uniform makes it easier for the patients to recognize the nurse. Since a majority of medical personnel wear scrubs nowadays, it can make it more difficult to know which ones are the nurses. Regardless of the type of uniform, though, nurses' clothes are exposed to stains, dirt and germs. And they all need proper cleaning.

To begin with, rinse the items in cold water. This will loosen any stuck-on matter, debris and stains. That way they won't circulate throughout the whole wash. If need be, pre-treat any tough spots or stains.

Use white vinegar in the wash cycle. A cup of vinegar will disinfect the laundry. Vinegar is safer than other harsh bleaches and cleaners. It removes stains without damaging the fabric. It eliminates odors and even keeps colors from "bleeding" so they will stay brighter longer.

Fill the washing machine or washing bin with hot water and a gentle detergent. Wash the items for at least 10 minutes. The hot water is necessary to kill bacteria and helps remove stains. Using the "delicate" setting on the machine can make the clothing last longer. Turning them inside out can protect the colors.

After the laundry is washed and rinsed, place them in the clothes dryer for 30 minutes. The heat with further disinfect them. Ironing is another good way to eliminate germs and make the uniforms look crisp and professional.
