The Benefits Of A Small Dog Harness Compared To A Collar

By Maryanne Goff

Dog collars and harnesses are most commonly used and effective methods for the management of canines. It serves as an aid when teaching animals lead manners, commands, and provides the owner and the canine better control while out; however, smaller breeds may benefit from alternatives due to delicate structures. With regular use of the small dog harness it allows for effective pet management without risk exposure.

The collar allows one to use pressure on the neck area of canines in order to implement the necessary commands such as heel, sit, and stay. The choke chain collar range places a constricting sensation around this region to prevent dogs from pulling excessively and therefore aids in better control measures. Unfortunately such mechanisms may prove devastating for smaller canines with weaker structures with many having become seriously injured around the throat area from being pulled or tugging against the lead while being constricted.

The harness serves as an alternative for smaller canines as it assists in maintaining and managing the canine without exposing the animal to serious harm and injury. For breeds such as Chihuahuas these means of restraint are best because it does not wrap around the throat area making it a suitable choice to implement training methods. The pressure is placed on the body that the pooch is able to withstand rather than the soft tissues of the upper neck area.

The harness is also safer and provides a greater sense of security for both the owner and the pooch. The larger animals are unable to benefit from these devices as they will pull against the harnesses with their physical power and size making it impossible to effectively control on the lead. For tiny animals they can be managed as they are not strong enough to pull or tug.

A major advantage is the fact that harnesses offer greater levels of safety and more effective. The tiny breeds will experience greater levels of distress and choking when the collar or chain becomes wrapped around the throat that could contribute to serious injury. Animals are also known to move out of their collars increasing risk for losing them or involved in car accidents.

Harnesses are designed to fit around the torso and act on these pressure points rather than around the neck. It serves as one of the better control mechanisms as the entire structure of the animal is required to face the same direction as the owner. It is unable to make its way out of the mechanism and offers better support especially if the animal possesses a handicap.

For those who will engage in running or sled activities, the use of these mechanisms will provide the most benefits. Animals are provided with the suitable equipment where the pressure is distributed rather than being solely placed around the neck region. This can assist in relieving the possibility of discomfort.

The small dog harness has proven best in comparison to chokers, collars, and similar means of control. The owner is better able to manage the animal and it prevent against possible escape and serious harm. For the comfort, safety, and care of tiny breeds, it is important to consider suitable measures for maintenance.
