Unique Dog Beds For All Tastes

By Essie Craft

Store bought furniture for pets generally tend to follow certain trends that leave them looking common. There is not much variation in style and little personality, not to mention they often do not have a lot of decorative quality. Luckily, with a little imagination, it is a simple task to take ordinary items and create unique dog beds from them.

A lot of people do not like the fact that commercially available pet bedding does not usually blend well with their room designs or that it is just unattractive. Purchasing a special piece that does match the existing furniture can become a quite costly adventure. These are just two of the reasons many folks have taken to creating their own doggy beds.

A clever way around the clashing decor issue is to take an existing end table, or find one that will fit in, and transform it. The renovation could be as easy as removing drawers and shelving and replacing them with pooch's favorite bedding. Any doors may be removed to leave it open or left so that they can be closed during the day and the piece not only blends but still functions for holding lamps and drinks.

Re-purposing has the triple benefit of being environmentally friendly, money saving and the perfect way to get something that fits one's personal tastes. An older model floor console television that was once an eyesore can be gutted to become a private room for a pooch. Curtains may be added for privacy, while picture frames and wallpaper can be used to make it homey.

Taking an old table top television set with the extended back or a non-flat screen desktop computer monitor and removing the glass and all electrical components will also provide the bones for a great pet room. Just add a pillow or blankets for the pup to sleep on and a cozy nook is created. Customize the exterior with paint, stickers, jewels or whatever suits one's tastes.

When searching yard sales or the local flea markets, do not be so quick to overlook those inexpensive coffee and end tables with legs. By placing feet, spacers or felt on the top and flipping it all upside down, one can create an instant four posted bed. Pillows, printed sheets, ribbons, a canopy or a customized paint job will do wonders for transforming it into a unique creation.

Some people look at vintage hinged top, hard body suitcases as garage storage space when in reality, they are potentially one of the cutest sleeping areas a dog could wish for. Simply fix it open, add something to the underside to protect the floor, insert bedding and decorate as desired. Those little pouches that normally adorn the lid are perfect for holding toys.

Creating unique dog beds does not take a lot of money or even a lot of time. With a little creativity, they can be made from many items including old tires, PVC pipe, pallets, wooden crates and barrels or dresser drawers. Using a bit of imagination when looking at everyday things around the home, at flea markets or yard sales could spark some amazing ideas.
