What To Consider When Making A Handicapped Bathroom

The most trying moment for a person with disability is the time they need to use the bathroom. If the systems in place are not good enough to make it possible for them to use the facility without any help, each call of nature becomes a major challenge because they must ask for help. That is why they need a handicapped bathroom in homes where they live.

To make sure all persons with disability within your home have an easy time, you have to make some changes to the settings to allow them easy movement. The bathroom in particular is a sensitive area. Many people can ask for help to do many other things but when it comes to using the toilet, people need some privacy. That is why you need to design the toilet and bath with such persons in mind.

You can use ramps instead of stairs because the wheelchair can easily roll up and down on them. Besides clearing the floor of any obstacles that can hold back the wheelchair, you also need to make sure the victim can easily reach other amenities within the bath such as faucets and taps are within reach. You also need to make sure the toilet seats and towel racks are not so high for the victim to reach.

Even as you make all these changes, you also need to consider other users. If you have a big house with many baths, you can easily transform one to conform to the needs of the handicapped person. If you do not have this option however, you can still make changes to have the baths serve both normal and disabled persons. There are ways of increasing the heights of toilet seats when necessary.

The trench will collect the overflowing water and direct it back into the main drain pipe. It is easier to push a wheelchair past a trench that lifting it above a barrier. Within the bath, you also need to make several changes. Most of the fittings within the bath will need adjustments. You should adjust faucets, sinks, water taps and toilet seats to make sure the handicapped person can reach them without getting any help.

Once they can reach the bath comfortably without having to get out of the chair, you need to make sure the toilet seat or bathtubs are within reach as well. To get out of the wheelchair to the toilet seat, the victim will need to reach the grab bars. For that reason, you must make sure the grab bars are also within reach.

With the grab bars within easy reach, the victim can easily lift themselves out of the chair and the toilet seat without any help. This will give them independence which is important for their development in life. You also need to bring down the bath sinks to a lower level so that the people with handicap can reach them while seating on the chair.

You must however make sure you look at the budget. Sometimes it is good to compare the rates before deciding on the best company to do the handicapped bathroom. It is important to note that some people with handicaps can do certain things without help. You can find out what your victim can do on his or her own before deciding.
