Teddy Bears, also called Zuchons or Shichons, are cuddly, friendly, sweet, playful, and adorable. They're small, usually 11-16 pounds. They can be a mix of colors in any pattern, making each pup a unique looking character. They're intelligent, eager to please, easy to train. Weighing less than 16 pounds, Zuchons are a great family addition for those who reside in apartments and condos. They'll bark to alert the pack to new arrivals, but otherwise are pretty quiet. They're sociable and enjoy traveling with their families. Meet their needs for adventure and exercise with a walk around the block, a visit to a dog park, game time in the backyard. This sociable little dog will suffer separation anxiety and develop neurotic habits if left alone too many hours in the day.

Teddy Bears are naturally docile, tolerant, gentle, and accepting of children. They do well with other household pets including the family cat. Expect your Zuchon to live 15, maybe even 16 years. Most weigh between 11 and 16 pounds. They have large, round eyes that will melt your heart. The soft coat doesn't shed. This is a hypoallergenic dog, a great choice for those with allergies to dogs. Regular brushing is necessary to keep the fluffy coat from tangling. A bath and haircut is necessary every 4-6 weeks. Mini Teddy Bears are a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Maltese. They look like miniature Zuchons, share the same adorable temperament, and are also hypoallergenic. They weigh 9-12 lbs, always looking like that cute little puppy you brought home.

Since the parent breeds are generally a healthy group, this little hybrid is a healthy, long living little dog. Like most small dogs, they occasionally develop knee problems. Eye problems and skin problems are in the genetic line. Although Shih Tzu's often have breathing problems, the hybrid usually has a slightly longer muzzle that alleviates this issue. Dental problems can be avoided by brushing your dog's teeth, feeding a high quality food, and providing dental chews.

This is a new crossbreed that has only been around since the 1990's. It's not recognized by the AKC, and there are no Teddy Bear registries. Teddy Bear isn't an official designation but usually describes a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. Other names for this hybrid are Zuchon, Shichon, or Tzu Frise. Sometimes the term is used for crosses including Toy Poodles and/or Yorkshire Terriers. Some may also be 2nd or 3rd generation hybrids.

Since there are no official registries, buyers need to do their research. Puppy mills breed for money with out careful attention to the genetic health or social needs of the parents or the puppies. It's best to visit the breeder to observe the parents and the puppies. Ask what has been done to socialize the puppies. Ask for health records. Ask if there's a health guarantee.
