Do Cavachons Shed At All

By Patty Goff

Dogs are beautiful and amazing beings, but they do shed. Some of them seasonally lose hair extensively. Toy dogs and designer dogs, both pure and cross-breeds lose very little hair. Thanks to the fact that most toy breeds breeders say their dogs don't have shedding problems, the question is do Cavachons shed at all.

Well, the fact is that all dogs shed, the question is only how intensively, and how to keep this under control. Whatever your breeder might tell you, if the dog has any hair, it will lose some sooner or later. Some breeds more, some less. Regular brushing is the best way of minimizing this, and an occasional bath can also be helpful.

Every hair has its lifetime. It simply cannot be avoided. Some breeds such as German shepherd, lose hair all the time, plus extensive seasonal shedding in the spring. They have to lose their thick, winter coats before summer comes. Dogs kept indoors usually don't get these winter coats, and numerous breeds don't shed seasonally.

People prone to allergies are always concerned about shedding, but if you keep your dog inside the house, it might also make a lot of mess. Allergies are really caused by dead skin cells that fall off your dog's skin, not by dog's hair, but shedding affects the quantity of these dead skin cells. Higher concentration of allergens cause allergies.

A good daily brushing should be enough to keep things under control, more or less. If you have one of those extensively shedding breeds, this will at least make your life easier. Cavachons and similar breeds won't make you many problems. You have to brush them anyway. For dogs with short and smooth hair, it might be a good idea to buy a special glove, these things are really great for this purpose.

Good quality dog food will affect your pet's health and minimize the hair loss. Add fresh vegetables to your pet's diet and give him an egg every once in a while. You can also give him a piece of his favorite fruit. Consult your vet about this and consider giving vitamin and mineral supplements to your dog as well.

Dry skin, fleas and different parasites might also cause more serious shedding, as well as various health problems. If the skin is really dry, something is probably wrong, and you need to consult the vet as soon as possible. Besides, in this case your chances of getting allergies are much higher.

Bathe your dog only when necessary. Although bathing can minimize shedding, it will also cause skin dryness. If you really have to give him a bath, use good quality, very mild shampoo only. There are also different special lotions designed for this purpose. They will nourish and hydrate your dog's skin.

When it comes to Cavachons, you won't have many problems with shedding. They shed very little, and regular brushing is enough for keeping this under control. It is also advisable to trim some particular coat types. In any case, if you aren't sure what to do, consult your vet about it.
