Steps On How To Do An Aquarium Maintenance

By Young Lindsay

It would save you a lot of cost if the aquarium is maintained properly and regularly. If it is checked thoroughly enough at time intervals, it would be kept clean and the fishes would be healthy. Having this maintained will take a few simple steps and would only cost you about thirty minutes of your time every other week.

The stability of the tank is a factor for the maintenance of the whole aquarium. Everything must be working fine and nothing out of place or broken, to ensure the safety and healthy of the aquatic pets inside it. Aquarium maintenance Cincinnati is done by close observation and attention towards this.

The water should be changed regularly every other week. Any changes of the water composition would greatly affect the environment within the tank. You can take out and replace at least ten to fifteen percent of the water and this is already enough for your fishes. If you have sick fishes, about twenty five to fifty percent of the water should be changed.

Make sure that the water you are going to replace with is fresh and clean from any other materials. There are water from the tap that contains hard metals, chlorine, and ammonia. Although some products may promise to condition the water, this does not remove the ammonia that is present in the water.

Be aware though that lukewarm water may be considered hot for most of the fishes. Get a thermometer and check the water you are pouring on the tank and see if it matches the comfortable temperature for these fishes in Cincinnati OH. For tropical fishes, the comfortable temperature is from seventy two up until eighty degrees Fahrenheit. As for goldfishes, it is sixty five up until sixty eight, while for fancy tailed goldfishes, it can be until seventy two degrees.

Make use of a siphon to suck out the water out of the tank and also with a water vacuum in order to filter out the tiny remains or other debris sticking to the gravel. For the vacuum, you can make use of a stocking that has not been used before as well as a bristle brush to clean the decorations. It is important to clean them as well so that the algae will not build up on the surfaces.

Observe the water if it is still cloudy or if it clears out after a while. There are water treatment agents sold in the market, but they would only mask the problem and would not actually solve it. Also, make sure to place a gap of air on top of the surface of the water so that they have enough exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen for them to breathe.

The equipment and walls outside should also be cleaned and this includes the light, the hood, and the top portion of the tank. Detergents should not be used since they have ammonia fumes in it and will be bad for the fishes. Other cleaning products are available that is specially made for cleaning aquariums.

For about once a month, change the filter cartridge. The carbon buildup in the cartridge would risk the health of the fishes. The beneficial bacteria are mostly living on the gravel and not the cartridge, so cleaning it would not entirely affect the natural filtration in the tank, so this can be rinsed off in a weekly basis if it is really dirty.
