Character Traits Of The Beauceron Dog Breed

By Barbara Kelly

It is no secret that dogs make excellent pets. However, not every breed is safe to have around your kids. You need one that has all the right traits for a safe home environment. One kennel that meets this criterion is the Beauceron dog breed.

In general, the dog is big bodied and very athletic. It has established a reputation of being a working dog due to the ease with which it can be trained and its obedience. It has a body length that slightly outdistances its height. One physical feature that makes it outstandingly beautiful is its long head that augurs perfectly with the shape of its body.

Unlike many species of pet dogs, this one has a skull length that is neither longer nor shorter than its protruding muzzle. Its dark brown eyes are enchanting. Also noticeable are its halfway prickled upward pointing ears.

In terms of temperament, the Beauceron is obedient and has often displayed an eagerness to please. It is also quite brave and portrays a higher degree of intelligence as compared to most dogs. Its obedience makes it the perfect candidate for training as it quickly adapts to commands.

For many years, the breed has been the darling of law enforcement authorities in plenty of countries owing to its extensive positive traits. Its watchful nature, loyalty and fearlessness are essential traits for dangerous police work. In the field, it has been on record as saving dozens of lives of law enforcers due to its ability to sense danger.

A Beauceron is also incredibly active and likes exercising on open fields. It is this aspect that has made it a darling amongst many pastoral communities. On limited occasions, nonetheless, there are a few that have gone as far as attempting to herd people. Fortunately, this aspect can be quickly resolved through training. The kennel loves herding as the running up and down helps it release unspent energy.

Without exercise, they are known to get agitated. As such, you might want to consider getting a different type if you live in an apartment or have little time to take your kennel outdoors. Exercise always makes the kennel calm.

Most dogs like to act aggressively in the presence of competing breeds. However, this does not happen with Beaucerons. They stay calm in the midst of other dogs and cats. Even so, it is prudent to keep it on a leash when other dogs are nearby just to be safe.

Another positive quality is their affection for kids, which arguably is an advantage if you are a concerned parent. They view humans as the ultimate authority and can never act aggressively towards kids. They also obey commands from all family members if they get treated well.

The breed also has a generally fast growth rate. A puppy can reach 40 pounds within 3 months. At times, this can be too much for a child looking for a pet to play with as he grows up. Despite their fast growth rate, they take considerably long to mature. Proper socialization is the trick for raising your puppy to be well behaved.
