Tips For Choosing Cavachons For Adoption

By Catherine Cook

When it comes to adopting puppies, most people are primarily sold on the way the dog looks. However, the characteristics of a breed should be an even bigger point of consideration. To ensure the likelihood of a successful integration into one's current lifestyle, it is always recommended that interested individuals learn as much as possible about their desired pet before seeking Cavachons for adoption.

Perhaps the first thing interested persons should realize is that these dogs will not be eligible for showing in AKC sponsored events. This is because the Cavachon is considered to be a designer breed - which means that is the result of the crossing of two different pure breeds. These dogs were created with the intention of combining the most desirable traits found in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise.

Not only can it be rather difficult to obtain a pup of this type, it can also be a bit expensive. The majority of these animals are first generation with one parent coming from each of the contributing breeds, which is why adopters are typically put on long waiting lists. There are second generation litters produced, however, the quality of their traits is not usually as high.

Belonging to the Toy category, these dogs are small. Thirteen inches high and about 16 pounds is the average for full grown adult. This puts them at the ideal size for those people who have limited space or who might live in an apartment.

A well-mixed pup will share many common characteristics from the two parent breeds. These include the large and expressive eyes, the short snout and silky softness of the fur. One of the main reasons they are largely sought after is actually because of how adorable they are.

Before adopting one of these dogs a person should be advised of the amount of grooming that will be required. The fur is considered hypoallergenic because it does not shed much at all, however it does grow a bit fast and can get dirty and matted rather easily. These pups will need to be brushed regularly and trimmed up frequently.

Those who are interested in adopting a Cavachon should also understand that the pup will require a lot of time and regular exercise. These dogs are really quick learners and are typically very well behaved, but they become very attached to their humans and when separated, can experience a great deal of anxiety. They should be socialized while still very young, and obedience training is best to begin as early as possible and then regularly and consistently reinforced.

Because there is no official list of reputable Cavachon breeders, one is going to need to do their own research and be very cautious when selecting the provider of their puppy. Speaking with others who have chosen to own this breed will provide valuable feedback on reliable facilities from which to choose. Since this is a big investment, taking the time to find out information such as breeder experience and animal treatment, is highly recommended.
