By Stephen Sanders

If you have just gotten a new dog or cat buddy, you also need to get him the items that will keep him healthy and happy. Drop by the nearest Vancouver pet products outlet so that you will find the various choices that you have for your pet. Before you become overwhelmed with your choices, decide beforehand on the most important items that you will need. Here are the basic ones.

Instead of feeding your dog human food, get him something that has been formulated to suit his needs. At the store, you can read the labels of the pet foods. There are ones for puppies, small breeds and larger dogs. You will also find specially formulated ones for senior animals. While on the subject of food, provide your pet with clean food and drinking bowls. These do not have to be as fancy as those with automated dispensers. Though those are also great options especially if you are away from home for most of the day.

Vitamins are very important particularly to puppies, senior and active dogs. Prevent them from having diseases by supplementing their diet with vitamins and minerals. You will also have to check with your vet about regular vaccinations and deworming, especially if your dog or cats spends a lot of time outdoors and it mingles with other animals.

There are many grooming centers in your area, however, it is always more economical to do the bathe your dog on your own. Buy soap or shampoo from the same store. If your dog has a skin condition, there are also medicated soaps that can help him heal faster. You may also need a rubber mat and tub to bathe your dogs.

Groom your dogs after you have bathed them. Use a clean towel and a blow dryer to dry his coat. Long nails that reach the floor should be trimmed and filed. Manual and electronic trimmers are available. Do not forget to clean their ears and eyes using the right solutions from the pet store.

It is important that you train your animal buddies to prevent undesirable behavior and accidents. Collars and leashes are necessary investments particularly if you will walk your dog outside. Potty train them using training pads and poop bags. Buy dog treats to reward good behavior. Once you have house trained them, you can move on to other basic commands.

Your animal buddies will also need a good place to rest. As puppies, they may need a crate so that you can also use the crate while house training them. As they grow, you need to get them a mat or a bed to help them sleep comfortably. Teach your dog to sleep only on these so that they will not spread fur on your furniture.

With the huge number of choices in the market, it may be confusing on which would be the best for your pet. Ask a veterinarian for advice. Keep in mind that aside from spending on material needs, you also need to give your friend tender love and care.
