This dog was bred in seventeenth century Europe and was primarily used for hunting burrowing animals like possums, badgers, rabbits and hares. It is very adept at catching these animals for its slim and sausage like body and small legs allow it to follow its prey down the burrows and holes. Due to this specific job function, many international dog registers classify this dog as a hunting hound. In fact the word dachshund actually means badger hound when translated.

This dog is also known to have extreme wanderlust, owing maybe to it being a hunting hound in the past. Thus should it find an opportunity to wander off, then there is a good chance that it will never come back. Thus it is recommended that it be kept in a fenced yard, leashed up or kept indoors. Keeping it indoors for a long time will this dog prone to obesity, so you have to balance exercise and diet with vigilance.
