How to Have Great Skin in the Winter

By Hanna Fay

The way we manage our skin should be in accordance with the climate and the different weather changes.

Avoid using masks, peels and other skin treatments that might be unnecessarily harsh. Don't forget the heightened sensitivity of your skin in colder weather. The cold, dry weather causes it to be more delicate. You can really harm your skin in the winter if you rely on the same harsher products that worked great in the summer, but aren't suitable for winter use. You can use masks, of course, to keep your pores clean. Just make sure you use one that hydrates your skin instead of drying it out. Clay masks are especially drying and should be avoided.

The rules for your cleansing cream are the same. You need to avoid drying formulations and use a product that moisturizes and hydrates your skin. Your moisturizer should be milk based so that it is creamy, moisturizing, and feels good when it is applied. Avoid toners that contain alcohol. There are many non-drying toners and some of them are gel-based and don't contain alcohol. They will leave your skin refreshed, not cracked and tight. It's not hard to pick the correct products for the season. Just choose products that counter what the weather offers. For instance, in winter your skin will be dry, so you need to hydrate. In summer, your skin will be oily and moist so you need products to dry it out.

If you make it a habit of moisturizing your skin immediately after you bathe, you will trap more moisture into your skin. Just pat yourself dry and immediately moisturize your whole body. If you can do it while in your steamy bathroom, so much the better. This helps to preserve the moisture you've gotten from bathing, as well as increasing hydration through the properties that are contained within the lotion. By now you should know that hydration is the name of the game all winter long.

Moisturizers are alike in many ways, but often vary in substance. The foundation for some is water and others oil. The kind of moisturizer that will best suit your skin will hinge on your particular skin type. For instance, if your skin is oily already; you certainly would not use an oil based moisturizer. Your skin would appreciate an oil based moisturizer if it is on the dry side of the spectrum. Winter weather can be beautiful, but it brings with it a set of obstacles that must be met. Boredom, and restlessness, accost many individuals because they must stay inside a lot more. The lack of adequate sunshine hours leads a lot of people to experience winter depression. They also have to deal with a variety of skin problems. It can be easy to handle the changing needs your skin requires during the various seasons even though, at first glance, it may seem like a complicated issue. When you see how well your skin responds to just a basic level of skin care tailored for each season, you will be glad you paid attention to its requirements.
