Dog Training Tips That Are Proven To Work!

By Sue Ellis

It is very common in households around the world to incorporate dogs and other domestic animals into the family home. Puppies can be quite destructive and often mischievous. Use the following article to help you start training your dog.

When training a dog, make sure to stay consistent. Write down the specific commands you want to use with your dog, and get everyone in your household to review the list and use the same words. It is also recommended that everyone use the same positive reinforcements for good behavior and negative response when the dog is disobedient. If other people are not following your training program, it can make your dog confused, which will set back your dog's training.

When training your dog never punish him; doing so will only make him be resistant to any further training. You should take steps to help your pet avoid bad behavior, but if he makes a mistake help him understand correct actions. Build a positive relationship with your dog during the training process.

Always train your dog in a motivated, positive environment. Give your dog frequent rewards for his obedience. Too much negativity and punishment will cause your dog to fear you more than want to be around you and follow your commands.

Dogs have the uncanny ability to have single-minded focus when something catches their attention. When a command is reinforced properly and often enough, your dog will begin to shift his focus from the distractions around to you in order to wait for your signal.

If you are attempting to train the dog to perform a difficult command, you may want to break it into smaller commands to make it easier for him or her to follow. One example of a complex behavior is getting the newspaper. The first thing you should do is to teach him how to hold something. Then he should be taught to recognize that item by name. After that, you should teach him how to take the object in his mouth. All this comes together when your dog successfully brings your paper right to your hand. Splitting a complex task into individual tasks is a good strategy, because the smaller tasks are easier to learn. Afterwards, the dog simply needs to learn to do them in the correct order.

Look for positive reinforcement methods that allow you to train your dog without the use of treats. Using treats as a reward for learning a new behavior works. However, it's unlikely that you will carry treats around every single day for the rest of your dog's life. Petting and hugging dogs as positive reinforcement while training is better than giving them treats.

Dogs learn by repetitive technique and reward. Perform the same training session every day with immediate rewards. This is how a dog will learn to perform a trick. You have to show them with plenty of repetition and rewards.

Have a blast during each training session with your dog. Try and develop a bond with your dog by playing with him, it will only encourage the dog to want to please you more during training. Training is fun for your dog, but it doesn't always have to be about learning something new. Play for the sake of playing.

You can enjoy the company of a dog and have a clean house at the same time. Of course, having a dog that causes destruction can make this difficult, but all you have to do is train him or her properly. If you remember to use the advice from this article, you will be able to coexist peacefully with man's best friend.
