When you look at small dog breeds, out of the lot of them, Yorkies are pretty cute. The key here is that although Yorkies are pretty popular amoung dog owners, there are a lot out there that just don't do a good job training their Yorkies. Therefore, it's to your advantage to know how to become good at training your new Yorkie.
It's no secret that these unique little dogs are so fun and amazing. One of the neat things about Yorkies is that they are amazing companion dogs and just love to hang out with you where ever you are. Unfortunately, their strong attachment to you can contribute to dominant behaviours if they are not properly trained. Socializing this breed of dog then becomes a priority otherwise they might become aggressive.
Who is in charge in the relationship should be established right away. You must take control of your home, assuming the role of the alpha male in the pack. Your little Yorkie will try to take charge and steal that role from you. At any cost, do not let that happen. Your dog needs to know that you are in charge of your home.
As the alpha leader you have to make boundries and simply exert your control over the dog. Some ideas to establish your alpha position in your home:
When you feed your dog: the Yorkie should be fed at certain times that you establish, not the dog.
Establish a walking schedule and try to go as much as two times a day. Have command of the walks, not the Yorkie. To say it another way, don't let the Yorkie walk you. When training a Yorkie, it's important for you to show authority. You will see the Yorkie try to gain dominance by pulling on the chain and tugging you in the direction it wants to go: don't let the dog do that. Do have control of the leash here as it is very important.
Small dogs love to jump on funiture and people: here's what you have to do to stop this. Get an old coke can and some pennies. Tape it up and when that Yorkie jumps again, throw the can in the direction of the Yorkie to prevent the jump.
The basics of going in and out of the house: You must disacknowledge your Yorkie when you come in and out of the house. When your Yorkie is relaxed and calm--only then, can you give them the attention they crave.
Bottom line: you can only really master training a Yorkie if you establish yourself as the alpha leader of the pack.
