How to Help Your Child Be More Responsible Over His Pet

By Nia Lawrence

So, you've finally given in to your child's adamant pleadings to have a dog to call his very own. Despite your lectures on increased responsibility and increased work load, he firmly insists that he can be a responsible pet owner. The only thing that's left to do is to help him out at the beginning, so he will learn to be the best friend his dog will ever have.

The particular breed of dog you have, its age, and its current physical health are main factors that affect your choice of dog food to buy. With so many options out there, you will need help in making the right choice. The first place you should visit is your veterinarian. Just like a child, your dog will need a doctor to make sure it remains fit and healthy. The veterinarian is naturally the best person to ask about healthy food. This specialist may or may not give you specific brands, but at least you will be informed about what particular vitamins and nutrients your dog will specifically require. This information is definitely helpful because you can just read the back labels of most food bags; see if these essential nutrients are present or not.

Another important aspect about buying dog food is knowing the right amount. The size of the dog is what most people use to determine how big a bag of Advance dog food must be bought on a monthly basis. Bigger dogs naturally require more food. However, there is also the individual element of appetite. Some dogs may not be the type to eat frequently, and if that is the case, you may be better off buying smaller bags instead of one big bag. Initially, you'll have to watch and observe the eating habits of your new pet. It may be a hit-or-miss during the first few weeks, but you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

You should also find the right kind of storage for your food. Ideally, you should not keep it in the original package because once opened, it'll be hard to keep the moisture out. This is what mainly causes food to quickly become stale. You should think of investing in a container that has a tightly-sealed cover. The size of container should be enough to hold at least one month's supply. You should also keep a dry measuring scoop in the container so that portioning your dog food will be easier for you.

It will take time to remember all these tips, but you'll soon get the hang of it. Keep in mind that dogs are happy when all their demands are met, and especially so with their Advance dog food needs. It's enough for them to have the right kind of food, in the right amount, at the right time.
