Toxic Dogs That Must Not be Given to Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Chocolate is well known to have dangerous and potentially fatal effects on dogs. Many dogs have died from eating chocolates. Chocolate has a toxic substance known as Theobromine that stimulates the dog's nervous system so that the pet will have a rapid heart rate and very fast pulse. Drooling, vomiting and diarrhea are the less serious effects of chocolate to dogs. Some dogs though are not so lucky as chocolates can stimulate the nervous system causing dog to seize and to die.

Chocolates are not the only toxic foods to dogs. Foods that are commonly consumed by humans can have dangerous effects on the dog. Dog owners have to know which of the foods commonly found in an average home can poison the dog.

Dog would get lots of benefits from eating fruits. Dogs though must be prevented from eating grapes and avocado because these fruits are known to have toxic effects on dogs. Dog owner these days have taken to providing the pet home cooked meals knowing that some commercially prepared food contain toxic preservatives. To entice the pet, the owner may enhance the flavor of the food by adding onions and garlic but these foods are very dangerous to dogs. Onions and garlic are foods that have toxic effects on dogs. Ingestion of these food taste enhancers has the effect of destroying the dog's red blood cells. Dogs that regularly eat onions can develop anemia.

Tomatoes and potatoes must not be given to dogs because these foods have toxic substances too. The oxalate that these food contain hampers the normal functioning of the digestive and nervous systems as well as cause damage to the dog's kidneys. Green tomatoes are most toxic but the leaves and the tomato plant itself would also cause tremors and arrhythmia.

These common human foods vary in toxicity. A dog that was purposely given these toxic foods may not be affected at all. This is not an indication that the known toxic food is not poisonous to the dog after all. Poisoning will depend on the quantity of the food ingested, the body weight of the dog and the amount of toxicity the food. The toxic food may have damaged the vital organs and these effects will not be visible. Dog owners have to be careful in allowing the pet to eat people food.
