Toxic Foods for Dogs List

By Jerry Welsh

Vets usually give advice how to feed and care for the dog thus if the pet is regularly taken to the vet it is expected that the owner already had these valuable information. You may have received from the vet a list of the human foods that must not be given to dogs. Aware of the dangerous effects of these common foods, you surely would be firm in denying the begging pet. Not understanding the effect of these toxic foods, the youngsters of the family would still sneak a few bites to the dog under the table. The dog under the table would have bite of the ham or a slice of the chocolate cake.

Coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages would be on the list. Coffee and tea are made toxic by the caffeine they contain that is proven to have dangerous effects on the dog's cardiac and central nervous systems. A dog that has ingested alcohol will get intoxicated. Consumption of these toxic beverages especially in large amounts commonly result to the death of the dog.

People with sweet tooth would indulge in chocolates and candies. Too much consumption of chocolate can result to obesity but consumed in moderation this sweet was found to be good for the heart. Chocolates and sugar-free candies are dangerous foods for dogs. Chocolate has the naturally occurring stimulant known as Theobromine that has dangerous effect on the dog's cardiac and nervous systems. A dog can die from eating a small amount of sugar-free candy as Xylitol, the artificial sweetener triggers a drastic drop in the dog's blood sugar level.

Raw fish and raw eggs will surely be included in the list of foods toxic to dogs. Dogs that consume raw eggs regularly have skin and coat health concerns because the avidin the raw eggs contain hinders biotin from being absorbed by the body. Raw eggs also have Salmonella. Dogs that are regularly fed raw fish would develop thiamine deficiency that would cause the dog to have poor appetite, to have seizure and in severe cases to die.

It has been the habit of pet owners to share the food with the pet. Sharing human foods with dogs are often seen in children as these little ones form strong bonds with the pet. It is therefore necessary for parents to educate the child about the dangers of feeding the pet foods considered poisonous. A printed list of the foods toxic to dog displayed in a conspicuous place would remind young and old members of the family of the foods unsafe for the pet.
