How Low Cost Spay And Neuter Helps All Pets

By Joyce Tucker

Unwanted animals are euthanized by the thousands each year just because nobody wants them. The vast majority of these pets are happy, healthy, and would have had bright futures. Participating in a low cost spay and neuter Ossining program if you can't afford to have your pet fixed any other way is a good step towards a better future.

Private veterinarians will perform this surgery as well, but they often price people out of an ability to do so. Low cost resources provide pet parents who want to get their pets fixed but can't afford private vet prices somewhere to go. Many are attached to shelters and rescue organizations, but others are run as private community organizations.

Pricing depends on the clinic, and sometimes works on a sliding scale, or might be a single set fee. Sliding scales allow the clinic to get more from owners who can afford it, while providing the service to everyone, regardless of their income. Sometimes, local agencies will offer free surgeries for over-represented breeds, or very low-income households.

Shelters and rescue organizations are funded by the government, or by private donations. They want to help, but don't always have to money to do so. However, they come up with interesting ways to increase spay and neuter rates, in many cases. Some shelters offer a chance to waive the surrender fee for puppies or kittens your pet has had, if you fix the parent animals.

Spayed and neutered pets are healthier, happier, and fit more easily into your home life. A lot of the emotions that people attach to child-bearing and parenthood are not present in animals, and they do not miss out on anything. Of course, they can love and be attached to their offspring, but if the opportunity to have offspring is taken away from them, they do not mourn it or feel sad.

Cats that are fixed do not get in so many fights, the males do not spray everything in sight, and the females do not yowl endlessly when they go into heat every three weeks. They do not wander as far afield, and are less likely to be hit by cars in their pursuit of mates. And reproductive cancers and infections are eliminated as health risks if the surgery is done at a young enough age.

It is not always as obvious why dogs should be fixed, but there are good reasons besides overpopulation. Female dogs in heat attract every intact male in the neighborhood, and fights can break out. They also bleed and may stain things. Male dogs wander, which leads to the statistic that the most common canine victims of cars are unneutered males. A common uterine infection which can be fatal in some cases, pyometra, is completely prevented by spaying.
