Movie Livestock Rentals Can Make Or Break A Film.

By Lilly Mcguire

Prop rentals are used all the time in major motion picture productions. This is true of any prop imaginable, including livestock. Movie studios are not in the business of raising and caring for live cows, horses, and other animals. Ranchers in neighboring areas are aware of this. Some people have started companies based on movie livestock rentals. While studios can house items such as sets, light-weight statues, and jewelry, the idea of keeping living animals on set for days and weeks on end is not convenient, sanitary, or in the best interest of the animal.

Working with a variety of people, including animals, is part of making a full-length film. Everyone involved puts in long hours. The added distraction of renting animals in advance can potentially set-back the entire time frame of the shoot. This is why it is advised to wait until the day before, or the very day the animals are needed before bringing them on location.

Hearing about how films are made and actually being part of a crew are two entirely different things. In many cases actors do not know each other and they certainly do not know the crew members. Moreover, cinematographers, make-up artists, wardrobe personnel, and newcomers are frequently brought together from different areas of the country. The overall budget has a lot to do with this aspect as motel costs are generally paid by the production company.

Each day generally begins with goals in mind. Scenes will be planned, location permits will be attained, and meals will be catered. Expenses can have a tendency to add up fast, especially when unexpected upsets occur which seem to happen more often than not. Meeting deadlines is the ultimate goal though this does not always happen. For example, an outdoor scene can end for the day, and then the lighting changes for the better which in turn prompts the cameras to come back out again to capture just the right mood.

Just like real life, not everyone likes each other. Arguments between people working on a film delay everything. This can be very tiring on background extras who are kept on set for whenever they are needed.

Making a full-scale production is a lot of work. Moreover, long hours and long wait times do occur frequently. Patience is a great thing to have; however, even the most patient of person can become irritated and tired when involved in a film. Stories of actors and actresses making demands have been told a lot over the years. This does not even begin to touch the conflicting attitudes crew member can have, making it nearly impossible to accomplish what needs to be done.

A production company may or may not make use of movie livestock rentals. A lot of factors are involved in making this decision. However, when live animals are used there is a certain element added fans pick-up on and applaud.
