FAQS About Homemade Organic Dog Treats

By Tameka Ware

Many pet owners would love to make their own homemade organic dog treats, yet they feel insecure about starting. They often have questions about the process. Once they have answers to these questions they will feel better about tackling this task. This is something that is good for your pets. You will be able to control exactly what they are eating and avoid anything you do not want them to have. You will have to shop at specialty stores or sections of your own market dedicated to products that are natural and use no herbicides or pesticides.

What are some good flavor combinations is a common question. Your pooch will enjoy many types of cookies. Peanut butter and honey, oatmeal and peanut butter are two that come to mind. Add other ingredients of course such as flour and eggs and your pet will have a yummy taste treat.

Those who know how much canines love meat often question whether or not a meat treat can be created at home. Much to the delight of the lucky dogs who live in these homes the answer is yes. Use shredded chicken, chopped beef or even liver. In addition to whole wheat flour you will use an egg and broth. Always use broth that is low sodium.

One more often heard question is do they have to be rolled out and cut with cookie cutters. They do not. You can make any of these cookies the drop type by scooping some on a spoon and dropping it on a tray. For those who enjoy rolling them out and cutting them, there are adorable bone shaped cutters on the market that would be super cute.

Canines love meat and one can make them snacks using meat as well. Shred some cooked chicken and uncooked carrots. Mix this with whole wheat flour, an egg and chicken broth. Make your own or buy the low sodium variety. Roll out the dough and use cookie cutters to cut the dough into shapes. Bake these in a 350 for 20-30 minutes.

A few people have questions because their dough did not seem right when they tried this and they want to know a fix for this. If your dough is too stiff or crumbly, add more liquid. A bit of water or milk will solve most of these issues.

Do not be afraid to experiment to find tastes and textures that your pet likes. You should try to tweak recipes to add or take away flavors. Try vegetables other than carrots sometimes. You can even make a yummy stew for your pooch with broth, chicken, rice and carrots. If you pour some of this over dry food, your pooch will be sure to reward you with lots of tail wagging happiness.

Your homemade organic dog treats can be stored in an airtight container. Store ones made with meat in the refrigerator. Other cookies can be kept on the counter in a bag or container. They will however last longer if they are kept in the refrigerator.
