Tips On How To Deal With Bulldog Biting

By Kalinda Cowper

A bulldog biting a person is very common if the dog is not trained. They use it as a way of exploring things that are around them. It is advisable to train the dog to stop this habit when it is still young. Training a dog to stop any behavior is easier when it is young than when it is older.

There are several reasons why a bulldog may bite a person. This should be factored in before choosing a method of training it. In some cases the underlying cause of the problem may be a serious issue the pet owner may not know. The dog may use it as a way of communicating to the owner.

Lack of socialization is one of the reasons why this problem occurs. It may not feel comfortable around people. The owner should invite as many people to the house as possible so that it gets used and comfortable around people.

When a puppy is young it will learn the correct amount of pressure to exert when biting, through its siblings. If the dog bites another sibling and it squeaks, it will learn that it has applied too much pressure and it will know that it should bite with less force.

The owner can use the same principle on the dog. Bulldogs love attention and will go to great lengths to get it. When a person is playing with the dog and it bites, the owner should say a word like "Ouch" The owner should then get up and walk away. An individual should resume playing with it after a while. If it does the same thing again a person should walk away. The puppy will learn that it is not supposed to bite a person and will eventually stop.

The use of soda cans filled with pennies has also helped many bulldog owners to get positive results. Puppies do not like the rattling sound that is produced by shaking the can. The owner should rattle the can in its face each time the dog bites. Due to the dislike of the rattling sound, the bulldog will avoid biting the owner at all costs.

Bulldogs learn a lot faster when they are still young. If some habits such as bulldog biting are not dealt with early enough it may be harder and more demanding to deal with the issue when the dog is older. Training should start after it has interacted with the other siblings and learnt that bite inhibition is necessary.
