Essential Details Concerning Ear Cropping

By Catalina Nielsen

Since time in memorial, ear cropping has been an on going activity. The targeted animals for these have been some of the domestic ones although in these recent times, this process has been shifted to dogs of all types. It entails removal of a section of the droopy parts of ears of these animals. They are usually shaped in a given manner so that they can stand straight upon curing.

It is done by the vets using anesthesia and cutting blades. Once done, they are bandaged and supported uprights for them to heal that way. Changing of these bandages has to be done on a daily basis so as to avoid the cuts from contracting infections. The healing process takes four to eight days. This is the general time frame although; some tend to heal faster depending on the breed they are from.

For better results, this surgery is done on puppies ranging from eight to twelve weeks old. This is because at such a tender age, these young ones tend to heal faster and it will be simple to monitor their progress in healing. Besides, they are easy to manage with the bandages and also making sure the ears are upright.

The healing process after cropping has to be taken seriously and done rightly. One has to ensure that the puppies remain still and do not attempt to scratch the cropped parts. If this is allowed, the given parts will attract infections. This makes the animal to be in pain and a lot of discomfort. This caution has to be observed no matter what.

Cases of ears remaining fallen even after healing have been reported as of late. This happens when the right process of treating and dressing the wounds were not accomplished and the animal did contract an infection. Where everything went okay, it becomes just a matter of time for them to be up and standing. The owner just needs to exercise faith.

There are two main motives as to why people perform this operation on dogs. The first one is a belief that the dogs get an enhanced sense of hearing from a distance once a part of the floppy part has been done cropped. The explanation concerning this is based on the ability of the ears to stand upright at all times. They become sharper and can get sounds whether of distress from a far distance and alert the owners.

The second motive is to avoid infections within the internal areas of the ears. The reason here is that the floppy part is always fallen towards the cheeks and this provides a good environment for accumulation of dirt. This filth later on leads to infections since with the fallen part, there is no way for it to get out.

All these reasons lack scientific approval hence; nobody knows if they are true or not. On this basis, animal activists have come out strongly to advocate against ear cropping. According to them, it is unconstitutional, painful and does not concur with the rights of animals at all. This campaign is still on going up to today.
