Dealing With Different Manure Storage Options

By Lianne Derocco

To deal with manure is but one of the many tasks of hog farmers, whether raising only a few hogs annually or operating a rather large-scale farm. Once this particular task is unsuccessfully met, there will be an adverse effect on your animal population and even including the surrounding environment too.

It is a need to contain manure no matter the size of your hog farm and in consideration of this several different waste containment systems are available. Smaller farms need only to have small waste pits as opposed to larger hog farms where a waste lagoon should be put in place.

If you have a small farm, a manure pile can be built on your property. This needs to be built away from wells, ponds, streams and all other sources of water so as not to contaminate these water sources. For a small scale operation, you also will want the waste pit to be fairly far away from your own housing as well as the homes of any of your neighbors.

Remember to line and cover your waste pit. Avoid having your waste washed out of your pit come the rainy days by covering your pit or else toxins will be spread and nutrients removed thus preventing you from producing good fertilizers. Manure can also be turned to compost and products like Compost Plus can help as it contains natural microbial remediation isolates, enzymes and composting activation factors too. Decomposition rate will then be accelerated. You can also choose to contact a livestock manure recycling company for the collection of your accumulated manure in the waste containment system that you have. By choosing this one, it becomes viable for you to toss into your pit other materials that are compostable like vegetable waste, egg shells, sod, grass cuttings and yes, kitty litter too.

Aside from containment, waste lagoons should also be with a method of liquefying waste and transforming it to become useful fertilizer. There will be problems like sludge build-up, top crusting and foaming if your waste lagoon come poorly managed and this could be dangerous, even explosive. And so, in order to prevent such problems, treating your waste lagoon with a product like Agra Sphere should be considered.

Organic waste solids are being eaten away by helpful bacteria found in Agra Sphere. It contains no chemicals and also comes easy to use as no mixing is required in activating this particular product. It does not only eat away sludge and crusts but Agra Sphere also reduces odors and flies surrounding and following waste pits and lagoons which in turn helps in the improvement of the nutrient value of the manure that will give you higher profit for producing better quality fertilizer that is most fit for all crops - whether for your own or for others interested in buying fertilizer.
