Common Problems Associated With Livestock

By Lianne Derocco

There are many challenges that go along with raising hogs and other types of livestock. It doesn't matter whether your farm is smaller or a large-scale operation, problems can occur from time to time. When problems do arise, solve them using the most eco-friendly methods available.

Limiting exposure to serious illness is one of the most important jobs of a livestock manager, and there are definitely ways to reduce your risks. Wildlife management practices can be helpful, such as limiting the access of wildlife to your feeding areas. Deer, which can carry bovine TB, can be a particular problem if they come into contact with hay or other feed. Hogs can also become infected with a variety of diseases, but there are ways to limit exposure to most diseases, lowering your risks substantially.

Keep infected animals away from healthy livestock and this includes separating animals that might be recovering from an illness and are symptom-free. In many cases, the animal can still transmit the disease even if they show no signs of illness. Be sure to consult with a qualified livestock veterinarian at the first sign of illness in any of your animals.

Livestock produce waste and they produce a huge amount of it, and if you deal with livestock, waste management will be a huge part of your job. If not properly treated, waste units can become crusted and clogged and can be a cause of serious illnesses among your animals.

Keep waste units as clean and highly functioning as possible does not have to be a difficult process. Using a product such as Activator Plus can be a huge help in reducing crusting at the top level and can be used for both pull plug systems, as well as deep pit containment units. Activator Plus uses no chemicals, and is created from a mix of bacteria. It will quickly work to break down all of the organic matter in waste and sludge.

Another option is the Agra Sphere system which is formulated to reduce the buildup of sludge, prevent crusting and reduce both flies and odors. Each of the biodegradable spheres will treat and maintain up to 60,000 gallons of contained deep pit waste and sludge.

Both of these products are veterinarian-approved and safe not only for all livestock, but also for humans, as well. If heavy crusting is in place, it is recommended that you first treat with Activator Plus and then begin using the Agra Spheres after the crust has been liquefied.
