Finding A Good E Collar Alternative

By Sherry Gross

If you have a dog, you have to remember that there are times when a visit to the vets office would require him to undergo surgery. He may have a medical condition that warrants that or he just happened to hurt himself and a wound opened up. You know how important it is that the injured area is properly taken care of. Preventing them from doing any further damage to the area is crucial.

A lot of pet doctors would recommend that these animals should wear the cone around their collars to prevent them from licking the wounded area. They might end up opening some stitches again, thereby causing the wound to heal longer than what is necessary. Not lot of pets are fond of these items though. So, some owners would rather find ways on how they can get an E Collar alternative.

Not many owners are fond of this cone too. They know that not a lot of pets like it when these cones are attached to their necks. They are not used to it. They feel uncomfortable. So, oftentimes, they whine and cry and be temperamental about it. Hence, it's not really surprising to find that many pet owners would be more than willing to get more pet friendly alternatives.

One must understand that the use of these cones tend to really help the condition of the pet. Sure, they might not like it. They might throw tantrums about having to wear it. But the cone does make a really good and effective job of preventing the pet for reopening the wound. As a result, they do tend to heal faster. Still, it is always worth checking for alternatives.

If the cone is really something that your pet ends up throwing tantrums for. Then you should think of finding other options that you may use on place of the cone. Instead of thinking about not letting him wear one, find ways on how you can get him to wear something for the same purpose, but may not be as cumbersome as the usual cone. There should be other ways that you can get him to heal better and faster too.

A good choice would be to use neck pillows, the ones that are being blown up. These are the same ones that may passengers tend to use to cushion their neck to avoid straining it too much in a long flight. To use this, you are going to need to have some sort of fastener so when you tuck it in the neck of your pet, it stays in place.

There are ones that are made of paper too, you can choose to make these by yourself. However, you are advised to go for ones that are very durable so your pet is not going to end up tearing them in no time. This can be a good alternative so you can avoid having to spend a lot of money for buying an actual cone.

There should be other available stuff around the house that you can use for this purpose as well. You might want to consider using a bandage to properly cover the injured area. So, when the pet licks it, he will not end up reopening any wound. At the same time, boxer shorts, baby onesies and such other stiff can also be used as stand in for the collar.
