By Ina Hunt

Shih Tzu or Lion dogs come from China. Small, hairy and adorable, they are widely popular and belong to so called toy dogs. There are several reliable Shih Tzu breeders in Ohio, and you can find out more about these lovely little animals from them. In the meantime, you can find some interesting facts about this lovely breed in this article.

If you prefer dogs with character, you certainly won't make a mistake choosing this breed. This little dog is full of life and always ready to play. Although he might be too small to actually defend you, he will be very good alert dog. His gentle nature, sharp intelligence and adorable appearance make simply irresistible combination.

Shih Tzu wants to be in charge and has a mind of his own. He needs a strong pack leader, or he will assume that he is the one. You need to be gentle and patient, but firm and consistent right from the start. Make sure that he understands the rules. Other ways, your pet might display some unwanted behavior problems, for example, obsessive barking.

These beautiful dogs come in all colors, but they do have some common characteristics. Liver colored ones have the same color on their lips, eye rims and noses, and blue dogs have blue noses. All other variations have these parts black. Their eyes are large and wide open, usually quite dark, although some varieties might have slightly lighter eyes as well.

Luxuriously long and dense double coats need daily grooming. Thanks to the fact they shed very little, or don't shed at all, it makes them more than suitable for people suffering from allergies. Allergies are actually caused by skin dander, not hair, and low shedding and non-shedding breeds are always more appropriate choice for people prone to allergies.

Every dog needs some level of exercise, even small ones. This lively, active dog will satisfy most of his exercise needs at home, but he will still appreciate his daily walk. It will make him much happier and healthier. Besides, dogs that don't get enough exercise sometimes might display behavior problems, or might become depressive. Daily walks will be great things for both of you.

Short but with long backs, Shih Tzus sometimes have problems with spinal disc diseases. They are also sensitive to low temperatures, and usually have quite sensitive ears and eyes. Your selected veterinarian will prescribe special eye drops to your pet, if you notice any problem. The important thing is to keep these areas clean all the time. They can also have problems with their noses, and if you hear them snoring, tell your vet about it.

Small breeds usually live longer. If healthy, your beautiful pet will live at least for fifteen years, probably much longer. Make sure not to overfeed him, because these dogs can easily get fat, and that will certainly affect their life expectancy. Reasonable amounts of good quality dog food, fresh water, regular walks and appropriate grooming are required for keeping your pet in excellent condition. Of course, it should be accompanied with generous amounts of love and attention.
