Understanding The Crazy Cat Lady

By Tammie Caldwell

There are some women who are obsessed with cats for a number of reasons. Some genuinely want to help cats because they are strays and do not have anywhere else to go. Others do it because they are lonely and need company. In both cases, society has coined the term crazy cat lady to describe women who have a large number of cats in a small living space.

One way of defining this type of woman is a person who loves cats so much that she wants to help as many as she can. She sees it as her great mission in life and can never turn away a cat that she sees wondering the streets on their own. Many times these cats will not survive if left to fend for themselves, so they have a better chance if someone is always there for them.

Most women who decide to take in stray animals are usually single. They are not married and do not have any children, so their focus is on the animals they have decided to take in. They believe that it is their life's work, and so they live their entire lives taking care of the cats they have adopted even though they do not have much money.

This does not bother the woman because they are providing a useful service as far as they are concerned. They might even believe that more people should be doing this for cats and dogs since these are the types of animals that are commonly found without a home. So despite the struggle, they continue because they feel they are meant to do this.

On the other hand, some women might take in many cats because they are lonely and need company. They might have been married at one time and are now widowed, and probably have children that are now adults and have moved out. This can cause a person to seek out a way to satisfy the emptiness that they feel and they might do this by having lots of cats.

She saw her first cat wondering on her front lawn one day and decided to feed it. It did not have an owner since she asked the neighbors if the cat belonged to any of them. So she decided to take this animal in and make it her pet. She was so happy to be able to provide for this pet, that her sadness and loneliness gradually disappeared.

The animals have now replaced the need for human contact. This makes it difficult for others to form any type of meaningful relationship with these women. Their obsession with their cats makes it difficult for someone to address this issue because if they do, they might make the woman angry creating further isolation. So most people will see them as being crazy since they do not know how to talk to them.

There might be many other ways to define a woman who takes in so many animals, but the two definitions discussed above are typical. Both of these women have a similar obsession with cats and having them in their home. Some may see this as crazy, but to the ladies it is simply what they love to do and they will keep on taking in these animals.
