What To Look For When Buying The Best Dog Beds For Small Dogs

By Tammie Caldwell

If you have a small breed dog, you realize that these pint-sized dynamos have their own set of challenges that are very different than those of big dogs. Making your dog comfortable doesn't have to be a challenge. Here is what you need when looking for the best dog beds for small dogs.

It may surprise you to find that beds designed for smaller dogs can be just as pricey as those for larger canines. This is because these breeds often have unique needs that make them more challenging than dealing with larger dogs. Here are factors to look for when it is time for you to shop for a bed for your pup.

Most beds are made up of some sort of cushion or pillow. If you want to get the most wear out of your particular bed, you may want to look for models that have a removable cover. This should be washable. If you can clean the outside, it can be a lot easier to remove any hair or dirt that is accumulated.

The stuffing that is inside the mattress is also important. Some people love soft padding that will keep their little one comfortable and well supported. Others prefer cushions that are filled with memory foam as these can be very comfortable as well. If you are concerned about pests and parasites, you may want to try a cushion that is filled with cedar shavings or chips. They are not as padded but they do smell nice as well.

Where you are placing the bed may influence the features you look for. A good example would be a bed that will be used outside or in areas where the air may be cold. If you want to keep a dog comfortable, looking for a bed that has a heated mattress may be something you want to consider. If it is important for the bed to blend in with other furniture, look for wood colors that match and fabric that will work with other items in the same area.

If you have a specific place in mind for the bed, you may want to measure the space where the bed will be placed. Then you can make sure that it will fit well where you want to put it. Remember that unless the bed has a frame the cushion may spread and end up taking up more space than you originally intended it to do.

Although you may not think that a bed for a small dog would need to be durable that is often not the case. Small dogs like to chew and dig as much as their larger counterparts. If you do not find a model that is durable and can stand up to wear and tear you may find that you need to replace your pet's bed much more frequently than you would want to. Look for durable fabric covers for mattresses and frames that do not stick up far enough for the dog to be able to chew it.

The shopping process does not have to be difficult. Once you know the size and style you want you can start looking for different models to choose from. You can find many different options in pet stores if you want to look at them in person. If you don't mind shopping from pictures and product descriptions you may find that you will be able to get some great deals by checking out pet websites.
