Allergy Sufferers Can Enjoy Non Shedding Hypoallergenic Large Dogs

By Amy Perry

Owning a pet is an experience that everyone deserves the opportunity to have. Sadly, for many people - especially those who suffer from allergies - this is something that has always seemed like an impossibility. Thankfully, there are several different breeds of non shedding hypoallergenic large dogs from which these in individuals can choose.

When a person is allergic to canines, it is not the actual dog that they are having a reaction to, but the dander that it produces when it sheds. When this factor is removed or reduced, these individuals can actually tolerate being around the pups without any issue. Most people are under the impression that only small breeds fit this category, but there are several larger ones as well.

Standard Poodles are very regal and among the more popular larger breed choices for individuals who suffer from allergies. They have a coat that is very much like thick hair, set in densely packed curls that rarely sheds but does require the attention of a professional groomer to remain controlled. Their loyalty and high intelligence are quite appealing.

Another favorite in this category is the noble Airedale Terrier. Perhaps their most distinguishing feature is their amazing double coat, which is made up of an under layer of soft fur topped by a layer of coarse strands with will need to be hand stripped at least once a year in order to stay clean. They have remarkable intelligence and discipline, which has historically made them well suited for police duty and as efficient rodent hunters.

Giant Schnauzers are just as wonderful as their miniature counterparts but there is just so much more of them to love. With their fur, the shed and dander factors are virtually nil but it must be kept trimmed short and brushed regularly to remove the need to have it hand stripped on a monthly basis. They require a great deal of exercise and make excellent guardians as they are incredibly protective of their pet parents.

Members of the sheepdog family, Komondors actually look like sheep. The advantage to their no shed coat made of coarse dreadlocks is that they never have to be brushed and it only needs to be trimmed about once a year. The biggest maintenance factor is that because they are totally white they show dirt very well and require regular bathing which means one has to wait a long time on their thickly corded fur to dry.

The Irish Water Spaniel is the largest of its type and they are easy on the allergies, fun loving, energetic, easily trained, and eager to please their humans. Their distinguishing features include webbed feet and a waterproof coat that is perfect for a dog that is appropriately named for its love of swimming. They have thick curls that do not shed, but require weekly brushing and regular trims to keep it neat.

Allergy sufferers have different breeds of larger canines from which they can make a selection. The variety is so vast that there is definitely something for everyone. They are all quite big and have that wonderful benefit of having the genetic advantage of having virtually no shed or dander producing factor, which is why they make perfect pets for people who thought their allergic reactions would stand in the way.
