This article highlights some of the factors that one needs to consider before buying this breed of dog. What to learn about Old English Sheepdog Puppies for Sale.

Firstly, it is vital to note that this breed of dog was designed for herding animals, making it a working type of dog. But people rear them today as pets and house dogs. In the case of petting them in the house it is important to have someone around the house at least most of their lives. These dogs are social and being around people helps them to keep a good psychological condition.

Apart from that, this breed of dog has a natural instinct to chase after moving objects such as bodies or even cars. For instance it will not be shocking to see a sheep dog chasing after running cars and moving bodies. In order to avoid accidents it is better to restrict their movement by fencing the backyard or around the house. However, the fence should not be electrified.

The puppies usually need to be exercised regularly to maintain good health. However, the exercise should be restricted to certain activities under certain conditions. When taking them for a walk, one should keep the distance short but frequently. One can engage the puppies in fetch games and allow them to play with other dogs and pets. It is important to keep jumping to the minimum and to avoid long-distance treks.

The puppies should not be forced to partake in any activity. Upon maturity, the exercises are conducted without restriction. Adequate exercise is important in order to give the dog a slender body conformation. Enough exercise is also important in causing fatigue for the dog in order for them to sleep well. Lack of exercises results in the development of undesirable behavioral traits such as barking and digging around the compound.

Mental exercise is also needed alongside physical exercise. This keeps their minds stimulated. Mental exercise can be achieved through sports such as carting, rallying obedience, agility and herding sports. Home-made obstacles courses and challenging dog toys can also be used to keep the puppies occupied. It is also encouraged to research further in order to know the type of mental exercise needed.

These dogs require a lot of grooming to remain healthy and good-looking. The coat needs to be brushed regularly. Alternatively, one can have the coat clipped so that it remains short. If the coat is left long, clipping or trimming should be done once in a few months.

The diet of this breed of dogs entails a lot of meat. The food can be homemade or bought from the commercial areas. These dogs grow to a huge size and therefore it is important to have a consistent food supply in order for them to remain healthy. If it is impossible to maintain this breed one is advised to go for smaller breeds.
