Before You Buy Nigerian Dwarf Goats Santa Cruz County

By Frank Bailey

Currently you are thinking of getting a new pet. And not just any new pet at that since you want to steer away from the regular pets like cats and dogs. You have a bit of space to spare also and you are thinking of something unique to keep on the space that you have. It has crossed your mind to get some dwarf goats from a Nigerian Dwarf Goats Santa Cruz county dealer but you will need more information. Do read on in this article for your needs.

The goat is a small breed of dairy goat that was imported into the United States in the 1970s. It is a breed that is listed as a rare breed and roughly there are about 25,000 registered, but this will probably change as the breed starts to become more popular. Its milk has the highest levels of butterfat and very creamy that many prefer it over cow milk.

This goat is not only good for making milk, but it is also gaining popularity as a pet as well. This is because it has a friendly personality and a gentle temperament. It can get on quite well with children and can be trained fairly easily. Due to its personality, it is also used much in hospitals and nursing homes for therapy pets.

Despite their small size, they do require quite a bit of space to frolic in. As such they also need some things that they can climb and jump on like small tree stumps and also large rocks. Should they live on a farm or other such place, they can easily live with other livestock.

As regards nutrition they are fairly easy to feed. They will munch on almost anything including bushes, trees and weeds before they will feed on grass. Owners sometimes also give them grains but this should not be overdone as they can easily be overfed and will lead to health complications.

If kept for breeding purposes there is a reliable general rule of thumb. You should start breeding them when they are about one year old and stop breeding, especially for the females, when they reach seven years old. Older goats will have a harder time to give birth so its safer to stop them when they get to about 7 years of age. Expect these goats to give birth at least two to three times per year.

It is also well advised that when starting to keep theses goats as pasture animals or even pets that they should be kept in a group of two or more. This is due to the fact that they are herd animals and used to living in one. Just keeping one single goat will mean that they can get depressed and be not so lively as expected.

Thus this article has given you some insights if you are to undertake your project of keeping this goat as a pet or even breeding animal. There are also other considerations to take into account but suffice it say that the ones covered here in this article will be enough to put on the road to owning and taking care of them.
