Steps To A Successful Puppy Potty Training Class

By Lisa Clark

A lot of households today keep pets for various reasons. The pet might turn out to be a blessing or not based on how it behaves. If it urinates or poops all over in the house, it will turn out to be a frustration. You do not have to wait until it reaches this extent. Pets like pups can be easily coached on how to use the toilet to avoid messing the house. The following are guidelines to a successful puppy potty training class.

The reason why most people fail in these classes is failing to begin coaching the right way. The first day you walk into your house with a pup, start building a relationship that will lead to trust and respect. Furthermore, show the pooch the areas it can explore or roam. Most people allow the dog downstairs but not upstairs because it might mess the bedrooms. It will be easy to coach a pooch if it knows the areas that are off limit.

Similarly, if you want the toilet coaching session to be successful, research the breed of your puppy and its various needs. This will help you understand the way they behave when they want to pee or poop so that you can take action. Some will squat, circling, scratch the floor or start sniffing. If you can understand these signs, it will be a piece of cake to coach the pooch. However, you must spend time or keep an eye on the pooch.

The next key thing is to select a potty zone in your yard. Whenever you find the pooch trying to urinate anywhere else apart from these zones, you should interrupt by making a certain noise. Otherwise, if you see certain signs of needing to relieve itself, take the pup outside to the area that you have set aside. Ensure that the place is easy to clean and close to the house. After some time, the dog will know the smell of urine coming from the spot and know it is its bathroom.

The other step is looking for sounds that you will use to signal the dog to go to the spot and when to do so. Pups are not very different from humans since they recognize sounds and command words if they are used often. Be careful with the words or sounds to use to prevent confusing the pup.

Urine contains ammonia and it is the reason where dogs are able to know their potty areas. If you want it to frequent the zone, you can spray the coaching pads with ammonia to attract them. However, in the case that accidents occur and the puppy urinates or defecates in the house, if you do not clean the place well, the dog will always be attracted to the spot.

If you allow the puppy a large area to explore, most of the time you will not be monitoring what the pooch is doing. Keep it on a short leash or a small room. Remember not to limit the space too much to the extent of preventing it from playing or stretching.

Finally, consistency is key to a fruitful class. Therefore, the thing you do the first day when you begin the training including the spot you used, commands or sounds and the toilet zone, should all remain the same to the end.
