Useful Information Regarding Egyptian Mau For Sale

By Pamela Baker

Cats are usually rated as the second most popular pets after dogs. That means that the number of cats that are kept as pets is only second to that of dogs. To meet the high demand of pet cats, there are very many breeders that breed and sell these animals. Also, there is a huge number of different breeds of cats and the Egyptian Mau is one of them. Here are facts regarding Egyptian mau for sale.

This breed of cat is currently one of the oldest cat breeds that exist. The origin of this breed can be traced to the Egyptian civilization. Its name comes from the Egyptian name mjw which when translated to English means cat. The spotted felines that are portrayed in palaces and pharaonic temples inspire the theory that the cats have their origin in Egypt.

Despite the close resemblance between the mau and the felines on the Pharaonic depictions, it is actually not clear if the two are the same breed of cat. People just assume that the depictions are of the mau and so think that maus came from Egypt. This theory is supported by the fact that there is no other strong evidence to support another theory.

There is also the possibility that their origin may be in Europe. According to DNA tests, it is believed that the feline may have originated from somewhere in Europe. There are also great similarities between the Maus and European cats such as the Turkish Angora whose breeding was done in the United States. On the other hand, modern day Egypt has many spotted cats thus supporting the idea that the Mau may actually have come from Egypt.

Maus were pretty popular in the years prior to the Second World War. During this time, they were bred in significant number by various cat fanciers. They were also exhibited in various shows in Europe. When the Second World War started, attention that these cats received before dropped significantly. In fact, they were neglected to a point that they almost went extinct.

Natalie Trubetskaya fortunately saved the species in the 1950s by importing them from the Middle East and breeding them. At that moment, Natalie was staying in Italy. Natalie came along with three maus when she moved to New York city in the US. A whole cattery of the Egyptian maus therefore resulted from the three maus.

The many Maus that are currently in the United States can trace their ancestry to the three cats that Natalie brought in the US back in the 1950s. More cats of the same breed were imported. They were also crossbred with other breeds to produce other species. It popularity continued to grow and by 2014, it was classified as the 20th most popular breed.

An interesting fact about this breed is that it is the only breed that is naturally spotted among cats. This breed is the ancestor of all spotted cats. For this reason, Maus have a distinguished status in the cat world. They usually have a small head, large eyes and small paws with a slender muscled body. They are also the fastest domestic cats.
