By Gregory Ellis

Also considered as important members of the military, these are dogs that receive special training enabling them to carry out specialized tasks in the battlefield. Such tasks would include, identifying explosives in the battlefield, fishing out hidden drugs and weapons, protecting particular people in a military squad and ensuring that all troop members safely exit a war zone. In most cases, specific breeds as German shepherds, Belgian malinois and retrievers are seen perfect as war dogs.

Over the past years, they have in most occasions been utilized when war arises. Most notable is the use of hounds during the American civil war to protect prisoners. They are chosen over other animals for military roles due to a number of characteristics they poses. Such characteristics include, loyalty, an acute sense of smell, quick learning capabilities, predictability and athleticism.

While in training, they get to have well trained personnel to handle and manage them. Such individuals usually are referred to as the dog handler. Similarly, while on the battlefield, such handlers normally are assigned to them. It is required that each dog specializes on a particular field after an average training period of 90 days. Such fields of specialization would include, military personnel protection, explosive detection and drug protection.

Given the fact that they face imminent threats on the battlefield, they get to sport protective gear that serves other purposes as parachuting. Such gear similarly would allow the handler to reach out to the dog when separated. Good technology sees to it that they utilize efficient and convenient gear while in war zones. Such technology ensures a lighter gear for easy maneuverability, and that which still maintains its protective capabilities.

After being exposed to the violence in the battlefield, most of them get psychological traumas. Such traumas usually are referred to as post-traumatic stress disorders, and are similarly suffered by human soldiers. Symptoms to such disorders would include, withdrawal, deteriorated dog-handler relationship, a never ending need to flee war-like scenarios, poor task handling by the dog and paranoia. Thanks to the medical profession, an effective therapy for such conditions is available.

In the past centuries, the heroic deeds of these animals often went unnoticed. However, in the 21st century, such heroism both in the battlefield and in the normal life is well awarded. Such awards usually are bestowed upon heroic military ones whether dead or alive. Most notable of these awards is the PDSA dickin award. Additionally, those that do not make it out of the battlefield get solemn masses conducted in their honor.

After long years in military service, these animals get to retire through adoption programs. Usually, the veteran dog is put up for adoption and eventually gets adopted by a suitable family or individual. Special care is provided to the disabled ones too. To ensure that they are comfortable, frequent visits are made to the dog and reports on their conditions collected. This in order to make better such adoption programs.

Conclusively, it would be right to state that dogs are important players in the human history. This considering the various great deeds that they accomplish for men.
