Basics About Ragdoll Kittens For Sale

By Diane Turner

A ragdoll is a breed of cat that has blue-colored eyes and distinguishing colorpoint coat. It was developed by an American breeder named Ann Baker in the years of 1960s. The best characteristic features for this cat breed are docility and placidity. When in need of ragdoll kittens for sale, it is important to learn more about the breed before setting out to make a purchase.

This breed is marketed by breeders as being floppy, calm, and docile. It is said that these features are inherited from the Birman and Persian breeds. There have been divided opinions about the origin of docility in the breed as other people argue that is resulted as the result of genetic mutation. Some breeders are determined to breed the breed away from docility.

Ragdolls exhibit a very friendly temperament, always running to the owner when they arrive home at the door. They will almost always give up anything to seat on the lap. When they are on the lap, they stay quiet and relaxed, something that contributed to their name. They respond fast when called by the owner. The breed is one of the most intelligent in the world. The level of trainability is also very high.

Docility of the ragdoll does not make it an inactive breed. In fact, it is quite the opposite because it enjoys playing with people. When a toy is thrown at it, it runs to fetch and return it to the owner. As contrasted from other species, vocalization is very minimal in ragdolls. They will only vocalize when they need petting or food.

Certain health problems tend to be very common among ragdolls. Some of these medical conditions are genetic in nature while others are not. Some common health conditions include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, feline infectious peritonitis, and calcium oxalate bladder stones. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is an inherited heart disease among ragdolls. Cats that carry the disease-causing mutation can be identified through a certain DNA-based test. It is best to have this test conducted before making a purchase.

There is little undercoat beneath the long fur, something that reduces the level of matting and shedding in the cat. Even with the little shedding and matting that occurs, grooming two times in a week is still mandatory. A stainless steel comb should be used to comb in order to prevent formation of tangles. Matting frequently occurs at the region where legs meet the body. For that reason, this area must be combed properly.

After thorough combing, one may use a curry brush to smooth the fur. A curry brush removes any loose hair that may be remaining. Grooming should be done gently without applying too much force or pulling the hair excessively. When this is done, ragdolls will enjoy the grooming because they find it to be attentive.

Cleaning requirements may be determined by the conditions in which the cat lives. It is important to give some attention to dental hygiene. Dental hygiene needs to be done on a daily basis. The ears should also be cleaned.
