Cats Getting Out on Halloween

By Robert Baker

You have made a great plan for your cat because you know your house will be busy on Halloween. But, Fluffy got out of the house.

So now, what can do you do to make Fluffy come home? First you must remain calm. Breathe deeply and then focus on how important it is to make take steps to get Fluffy back. Fluffy is probably confused and nervous so the faster you get your act together, the quicker you will find her.

If there are big shindigs happening at your home tell your guests right away what has happened. Chances are they will stop the partying and rally to support you. If not, ask them to leave quickly and quietly so that you can focus on Fluffy.

Lower your lights, get rid of any candles or noisemakers. These will only scare Fluffy even more.

Let trick or treaters know that you are not able to give out candy. If you have friends helping have them take care of children's handouts by stationing themselves at the end of the driveway.

Call your cat as you would if you were giving her something special. Treats on the cat condo? "Here kitty, kitty." Use a calm, normal voice. Reduce the stress. Your animals are in tune with your emotions. If they feel your anxiety their reaction will not be positive.

As soon as you see your cat try to get him to come to you. If there is some sort of noise he associates with treats or play use it now. Open the smelliest can of cat food to entice him to come closer

If Fluffy still does not come to you approach her calmly. Try to position yourself in a way that you can gently scruff her neck and pick her up. Use a towel to cover her once she is secured and get her home.

If none of this works and kitty is still missing immediately start looking for her at the county animal facilities, on Craigslist, Pets911 and at veterinarians.
