Chicken Coops Plans: Things To Consider

By Maxwell Power

So you're eager to get on with building your chicken coop, but you don't quite know where to start? You're not alone, in fact it's quite a common thing, all questions, queries and fears and misunderstandings can be put to bed with excellent chicken coops plans. The main problem that needs to be addressed is that there are many things to ensure you have in place for a successful chicken coop. Firstly chickens will always need a place to nest.

When it comes to looking at chicken coops plans, there is often talk of putting a roost in your coop, however it is seldom stated in the plans whether it should be a homemade one or whether it should be a store bought roost. This is a decision which falls under your own personal judgement. Keep in mind however, that if you choose a store bought option, that it is made out of a thin metal, that, whilst rust proof, is prone to sharp, jagged edges, and this can of course affect your chickens adversely. This option may be ok in the short term, but if you plan to keep chickens for a lengthy amount of time, then this perhaps isn't the best option for you. So make sure you give this due consideration when you build your chicken coop.

Chickens like many humans, need a place to feed! There are plenty of types of chicken food dispenser to choose from. Perhaps a long dispenser which has a grated opening, or maybe the smaller food dispenser, or you may even opt for an automatic one. Whilst it may seem more convenient for you to begin with, you should not just take out an open container of food to your chickens, as this will undoubtedly result in them defecating in it.

This also pertains to water dispensers. However with water dispensers you only have one option. The automatic waterer for chickens. There are many models of this waterer for you to choose from; however the one that is most popular is by far the galvanised metal model. You should make sure that you clean this daily. This is to ensure you don't have a build-up of residue.

You will need to make sure your chickens can leave your coop in some way, this is as essential as the building of the coop itself, as your chickens need sunlight each and every day. The final thing you need to think about is what type of wire you wish to use on your coop. There are many types of chicken wire on the market; you particularly want to get wire that doesn't allow your chickens to easily poke their heads out. This is to ensure that predators don't have an easy way of getting to your chickens!

Still raring and eager to go? Good! As long as you've got good chicken coops plans you'll be able to get started very soon!
