When Looking For A Kitten Or Cat Talk With A Ragdoll Breeder

By Rosetta Holder

Since recognition of the Ragdoll breed in the Cat Fancier's Association a few years ago, there has been an increase in those working with the breed. It is not recognized by most cat associations worldwide, although the breed itself originated in the United States, actually California. Here one Ragdoll breeder began working with domestic housecats to get the pointed, medium-length coated breed of today.

While most breeders work toward producing cats to compete in shows, the casual and relaxed personality of these make them perfect for families with or without children. Both males and females generally have this easy-going trait. Females are smaller than males, but in general these cats are pretty large. Altered males can easily weigh up to 20 pounds.

One of their most recognizable features are the white mitten markings that some of them have. However, it is not required in the standard. Some may also have a white blaze on the face or white markings on the body. They are beige or tan in coloration with darker points on the nose and ears, the tail and the legs and feet.

When looking for a purebred kitten or cat, you will want to look for someone with true interest in the breed, and not someone simply producing kittens to make money. You may want to see if your kitten has a pedigree with show performance in the background and will come with registration. This may not truly matter to you, except that it is proof of your cat's family history.

Most breeders do so because they enjoy showing cats and strive for breeding as close to the standard as possible. They are working toward the goal of producing show quality cats, although not every kitten in the litter will reach that potential.

You do not have to get a kitten. There are often retired show cats or breeders available for adoption by qualified home. The breeder should be interested in you and your family because he or she cares where the cats and kittens will be going.

While you can find a Ragdoll breeder on the internet, and by ads in the newspaper or pet magazine, another way to meet people and cats is through a show. Here you can see and visit with various breeds making sure that the Ragdoll is the right one for you. People here are usually quite friendly and willing to answer a lot of your questions. Be sure that this is the type of cat you want as it will be with you for many years.
