By Ellen Lamatan

Garden dining, neighborhood barbeques, summer holiday pool celebrations (even the inflated kiddie pool type), each of them most likely happen at the open garden. What better method to add every member of your family, and we mean ALL, in each and every challenge within the season than making the yard wheelchair ready. Dog wheelchair or people wheelchair available, either way, it's a win-win.

Designing transitions in the backyard for greater convenience needs a bit of work however the exact amount depends on the actual garden; but, the effect will certainly be worthwhile. Basically, making your garden comfortably navigable means clearing objects in the way and ensuring that surfaces are level.

Using a dog wheelchair, your disabled pet will have a wide range of movement but it will still not still be the same as using four legs. Maneuverability is still somewhat limited compared to what they had before illness or disability. Minimize the obstacles your pet or other wheeled guests might face while in your backyard.

First, how do they get there to begin with? Is there access from inside your house or from a side gate? Access from your house might mean steps, so make sure to install a ramp. These are easy enough to make. But if you're not handy, invite a couple of neighbors over and make an afternoon of it. Throw some barbeque on the grill afterward as a thank you; this will get the summer backyard partying started.

After that, confirm the top of the garden. Whether you've got grass, flagstone, concrete pavers, or wooden decking, the main thing is to make sure that there are no protrusions, that the exterior is flat and smooth. A dog and a dog wheelchair is light enough to not have a issue with wet grass, the exact same though, should not be said for a human in a wheelchair, so be mindful of this in case you have a grassy backyard as well as a wheelchair-bound guest.

That's about it. A clear space to wheel about for both canine and human guests makes a backyard and ideal summer hangout. Throw in a grill, a long picnic table, and comfy seats, and you can start thinking of excuses to throw a get-together.

Know The Reason Why People Use Stone Pet Urns

By Francisca Avila

Man has always had a certain affinity to domesticated animals. They treat them as companions, even as their kin. They even give their last name to make sure that the family knows that they have another member with them. Which is why, people have seen the use of stone pet urns as something that is necessary to show how much it was and is important to them.

You cannot just shrug off grief like it is some fly that just landed on your shoulders. As an owner, you may have had your animal companion for years. You probably do not even remember a time that you did not have one in the house. It may even be older than most, or all, of your kids.

Here are some ways to effectively move on after a loss of a loved one. It is not that simple to just move on. But, no matter what happens life, as we know it, must go on.

You are not to blame. Never ever think that you are responsible for the death of your animal companion. It usually starts with denial. And when you face the reality of the loss, you may feel guilt. The gnawing feeling that you may have failed to do something should never be entertained. Accept the fact that it is inevitable. Death is life's partner.

You should talk to your kids about it. Do not pretend that all is good with your kids. Tell them what happened, what was done and why it happened. Never tell your kids that it left for no reason. Otherwise, the child may feel that they did something wrong. Explain that it is nobody's fault and that it happens. Death happens even if you do not like it.

Gather your family and talk about it. Make sure that everyone in the family is on the same page. Make sure that there is no confusion as to what just happened. Express the emotions you all feel. The memories may have been good and bad but it is best that you all acknowledge that you all did your best. This is a good way to provide the emotional support needed.

You could get a new pet. Some owners resort to getting a new animal companion. It may be the same breed but remember that this is not a replacement to cover up any grief and just forget about the one you just lost. Think of it as having a new family member that would receive the extra affection you can give.

As your animal companion's owner, you could pick out one of the tips or you could do them all together. Remember that death is part of life. But you can always keep your animal companion close by placing their ashes in stone pet urns. You get to preserve the memories you have with your pet. And even after death, you are still showing them that they are very much loved and remembered.

Feeding Choices For Your Canine Pet: Commercial Dog Food, Raw Food Or Homemade?

By Michael Ward

Dogs are considered as man's best friend, and as quoted by Roger Caras, "dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole". Dogs are very good buddies, and are also very big help in performing some tasks for humans like hunting, herding, protection, assisting police military, and nowadays, assisting handicapped individuals. Dogs are very efficient companion thus, maintaining their good health is very important. To keep our dogs in good shape, different companies offer different types of dog food that provides the right nourishment for our buddies.

About 15,000 years ago, dogs which are form of gray wolves were domesticated. Over the years, other breeds were developed and now there are more or less a hundred of different dog breeds. The estimated population of dogs in the world in 2001 is a whopping 400 million that includes all types of breeds, most especially the toy breeds or toy dogs. Toy dogs have become popular over the years because of their small size even when they are mature. These dogs have the exact characteristics for people who want a dog pet but have small yards or lives in cities or apartments. There are also sporting, non-sporting, working, terrier, hound and herding dog breeds. Different breeds of dogs have different needs and this is why owners must take in consideration in selecting the right kind of food for his/her dog.

Also, an important consideration in choosing the best dog food one should feed his pet is the dog's age. Keep in mind that a puppy's food may not provide the nutrients necessary for an adult dog much that an adult dog food does not have the elements necessary during the puppies' growth period. You must also remember to include your dogs' preferences in the choice of food you feed them.

Keep in mind that a nutritious and well balance diet promotes and helps maintain good health, and choosing the right dog food for your pet can maintain a good skin and coat, strong and well developed bones, bright clear eyes, firmer stools, well defined muscle tone, quality life and longevity, no bad odors, fewer digestive problems, energy, vitality, fewer behavior problems, and over all health. Nevertheless, being prone to cancers, weakened immune system, liver failure, sluggish behavior, putrid gas, diarrhea, dull coat and heavy shedding, epilepsy, vomiting, ear infections, compromised hear and kidneys, stunted growth and weakened bones, bad breath, bowel disease, diabetes, cystitis, hypertension, build up in the eyes, arthritis, and countless allergies may be the consequence of feeding your dog the inappropriate food.

The type of dog food we may feed our dogs may either be commercial dog food, raw dog food, or even homemade dog food. Commercial dog food or store-bought dog food comes in either a dry form or a wet canned form. In choosing this type of food to feed your dogs, be not deceived of the conflicting views, hype, and marketing tactics of other brands, rather look into label to make sure that the one you purchased includes all the nutrients needed by your pet.

Raw food is another option of food to feed your dogs. Those dog owners supporting raw feeding try to mimic the diet of animals living in the wild -which they think is the ideal diet -for their domesticated animals. On the other hand, detractors believe that consumption of raw meats increases the chances of their pets of having food-borne illnesses. Another option is to prepare the meal yourself. Homemade dog food is the best option for dog owners having conflicting views on the various dog foods available in the market. With homemade dog food, dog owners have the complete control of meals they served to their dogs -hence, making sure that they receive the nutrients they need.

Despite these various feeding options, one must always remember that what is at stake in choosing the dog food to feed your pets is your dogs' health. So whether your Hundefutter -as they call dog food in German -is a commercial dog food like the Select Gold Hundefutter, raw food or homemade, so long as it meets your dog's nutritional requirements, then it is the best food for your pet.

The History Of Dog Breeding

By Evangeline Chandler

Dog breeding is the process of mating animals to achieve desired characteristics in their offspring. Skilled breeders select mates based on traits, such as personality, size, skills and strength. Some are bred to produce loving, family-friendly pets, while others are mated to produce working animals who are able to perform alongside farmers, police officers, rescue workers and others. Some canines are bred to become service animals, and can be trained to assist blind or physically disabled individuals.

Beginning with prehistoric humans, canines have been important members of communities. For many centuries, the relationship between humans and canines has been evolving. Today, three separate groups of canines function as human companions. These include sighthounds, hunters and livestock guardians.

Those who protect livestock against threats from predators perform their tasks by instinct. They become acquainted with their herds as puppies, and develop a bond with them. They are effective at protecting their home herd, but will not perform their duties in other herds. As an example, a canine who has bonded with a herd of sheep will not protect herds of goats or cattle. Some effective livestock guardians include Sheepdogs, Armenian Gamprs, Mastiffs, Komondors and Great Pyrenees.

The hunters are gun canines, including Dachshunds, terriers and hounds. The hound group is sub-divided into three categories, lurchers, scent hounds and sighthounds. The sighthounds have high visual acuity and great speed. These include Greyhounds, Afghans and Whippets. The scent hounds have highly advanced olfactory senses and can effectively track game. This group includes Coonhounds, Bloodhounds, Dachshunds, Basset Hounds and Beagles. The lurchers are a mixture of working dogs and sighthounds. A common combination is a blending of terriers and Greyhounds.

Terriers are effective at hunting mammals. They can track an animal's den, and go underground to drive them out. These include Jack Russells, Bull Terriers, Airedales, Pit Bulls, Kerry Blues, Yorkshire Terriers and Boston Terriers.

The short-legged, long-bodied, speedy Dachshund can effectively track animals into deep burrows. Their prey includes foxes, rabbits, badgers and prairie dogs. This canine is the only one to be certified for above and below-ground tracking.

Members of the gun canine group frequently accompany game hunters who carry shotguns. These include setters, retrievers, spaniels and pointers. They can locate small prey on both land and water. These canines include English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels.

Since prehistoric times, humans have practiced dog breeding to develop helpful partners. Their inherent dependability, loyalty, adaptability and agility make them ideal companions. In addition to the traditional fields which have used canines for many years, their use is expanding into new regions, such as medicine.

Should Our Pets Go Missing Do We Provide Any Protection

By Sue Jayfuss

As a nation of pet lovers we send Birthday and Celebration cards to our pets, provide them with presents, extras and cover their every need. No expense is spared. We thought this impression should be put to the test, by extracting a sample of our pet database, a fair mix between dogs and cats. We know through talking to our members that losing a pet is a massively traumatic experience and by and large we never contemplate it until it happens to you.

It is a little known law but dogs in public areas must have a form of identification on them, usually a tag, but in your home or garden this is not required, however, there is no such requirement for cats. But if they go astray or get lost, how can your pet have the best chance of being found and returned to you safely. Well this can be provided and, when you consider what is spent on pets weekly, be it food, toys, health insurance, etc, at a very, very little cost considering the anguish they could prevent. Tag, microchip, tattoo or tracker, all work to ensure your pet's safety to the highest degree possible but the results of our sample database search was interesting in what it revealed our owners considered the best protection for their pets.

The safest protection our survey gave of giving their pet the best chance of a speedy return is by having a tag and microchip fitted, - 40% of pet owners on our database have had these fitted.

2. The second highest percentage had their pets fitted with a tag - 21%

And in third place, having them chipped or tattooed - 13%

A surprising high percentage gave their pet no help of a speedy return by having neither a tag or a chip fitted, bearing in mind the low cost to provide such safety - 26%

These results have been taken from our database, (please bear in mind these people have registered their pets with us, in the main, either because their pet had gone missing or to have them covered under the safety of our tag system), produces results with a more "best case scenario" outlook.

Tags - From the results above it is evident that people mostly have a tag fitted and from shows we have attended they come with various information engraved, phone numbers, mobile numbers and home addresses all available - Some pets having numerous tags attached. From shows we have attended they are available in numerous formats with information engraved from home numbers, mobile numbers and home addresses being attached to the pet - and some pets having numerous tags attached!

With the correct tag only one is required - with no security worries of having your own details on show. These tags cost no more than having your details engraved at the a local store onto your preferred tag. The correct pet Reunification ID tag system will allow you to register more than one contact point which can ensure any finder of the missing pet getting in touch with their owner quickly. Contact details can be updated, changed, etc anytime by the member.

Microchip - So easy to have one fitted by your local vet - and for a one off cost of a less than a monthly food bill - the pet has protection for life. Vets, Wardens and Animal Homes have access to a Microchip reader and from there to the pet owner, so simple, just remember to update your details on the chip database for any changes.

Tattoos - This provides both a visual, like a tag, and lifelong cover, like a microchip, but is not so well taken up by pet lovers. It may be the method of tattooing a unique ID onto the pet or perhaps because the tattoo can sometimes become partially covered by hair that results in a low "take up" of this method but it can provide good protection.

Trackers - They will become more popular as people take up the technology that is available to enable trackers to be used and include network cover, battery life and the size of the Tracker being reduced, but as of today they are not widely used.

Advice: All have their own particular benefits but for a tried, tested and value for money system the Tag + Microchip combination keeps your pet as safe as any protection. A visual - the Tag, so any person finding your pet can, without going to a Vet, Warden or the likes have the ability to contact you, if the tag is missing or not used and the pet is taken into a Vets etc, then the Microchip will be scanned and the owner contacted. So if you have one or none it is well worth considering making that small investment in your pet's safety and you can as the owner, have peace of mind.

Preventing Litter Box Mishaps

By Angela Suarez

If you have a cat then at one point or another, you will be faced with a litter box accident. It could be something that your cat just doesn't like or she could be sick.

This is nothing to be angry over, because cats make mistakes too or they get sick. Read along to find some troubleshooting tips to help you clear up some of the more common problems.

If your cat is not using her litter pan or eliminating in the wrong spot then you need to find out what is causing the issue.

One of the first things you should do is take her to the veterinarian to rule out a medical issue. It could be something as simple as a urinary tract infection, which are painful and need immediate attention.

Cats, like humans are prone to urinary tract infections and they are not pleasant experiences for either, so your kitty will need prompt treatment to alleviate discomfort.

Once your cat has been given a clean bill of health then the next step is to study her litter boxes.

Are they clean and tidy? Do you scoop them out daily? Do you make the effort to clean the box at least once a month?

If your answer is no, then doing all of the above is next on your list.

To help prevent litter odors, have an extra set of paper towels as well as a bleach and water solution by your litter boxes to spot treat them when you clean every day.

The perfect time to do this is when you scoop out dirty litter on your daily rounds. It might be very helpful to keep a spray bottle and paper towels right by the box so you won't forget this little chore.

Do you have a sufficient amount of litter pans per cat? The rule (in general) is to have one plus one, which is one litter box per cat plus an extra one.

Something else that you should look out for is the fact that any changes you make to your cat's litter or box area has the potential to cause inappropriate elimination. It is perfectly okay to switch brands but you should do so gradually.

Some cats have been known to stick their noses up at certain litter because they don't like the smell or even the way it feels on their paws!

Keep a journal of changes you make so if things turn out badly (accidents) then you know what has caused the issue.

If you keep her litter box clean and tidy as well as stay consistent, you should be on your way to a clean and happy household.

How to Go About Keeping Chickens

By Joelie Trant

Keeping hens is a great hobby, and also gives you some lovely, fresh eggs for breakfast. People have been tending chickens for thousands of years, selectively breeding them into many varieties. The birds we see today are perfectly domesticated, great at laying, and easy to catch, all of which makes them perfect livestock. To keep them at their happiest and most healthy it helps to know a few tips.

You can purchase all sorts of houses for your birds. A quick search will show you everything from bog-standard huts to cutesy cottages for your hens. What's actually required is a space where they can nest and perch for the night to avoid being eaten up by the local predators. Inside you need about thirty-forty centimetre squared space per bird. So if you have six birds you'll need a one metre by sixty-centimetre house. Bear in mind that you might want to buy more birds after you've got started.

Collecting eggs is one of the joys of keeping these lovable creatures, but be warned - they won't always lay where you expect them to. As well as perches you want individual nesting box for each bird in your hen house. This is hopefully where they'll lay, but you might have to search around your plants a bit if they're free-range.

Chickens like space to exercise, so about six feet by three feet is nice for them in terms of a pen. You can let them out in your garden, but if you've got any plants you don't want torn up you're advised to protect them with a boundary of some kind - chickens will scratch the earth dry to give themselves a dust bath just about anywhere, and eat almost anything. Also make sure to shut chickens away if you're going out for a while - foxes don't just hunt at night, and one fox will finish off a whole clutch of hens in the time it takes to nip to the shops and back.

Aside from the obvious essential of chicken feed you can also supply novelties to keep them entertained. Hanging CDs in their runs, or hiding food in various locations is all good to keep them active and healthy.

Can Anyone Start Beekeeping?

By Andrew Frogshame

Bees are great. They're also not having a very easy time of things at the moment. The way we farm these days, with centralised, single product holdings being encouraged by big supermarket chains, means that where once there was enough variety of plant life to sustain a multitude of creatures, there's now what's known as a 'green desert.' That means a drastic depletion of songbirds, butterflies, and our favourite little honey makers.

In light of this it's a good thing that beekeeping is more accessible than ever. You might think that you need a lot of land, or some intense know-how to be able to get started, but in fact almost anyone can give it a go. What do you get out of it? Well, the fairly obvious answer is honey, which is a great incentive, but also the satisfaction of a fun and engaging hobby which involves a nurturing of organic life.

To get going the old-fashioned way you should get in touch with your local Bee Keepers Association. They're a friendly bunch, and you'll be supplied with all the literature you'll need, along with some opportunities to meet bees and beekeepers in your local area for helpful hints and tips. They'll be able to tell you what you need to buy in order to make a traditional frame hive, and also guide you through all the jargon that accompanies hardcore beekeeping literature.

Alternatively there's a new trend towards much simpler hives that you can set up pretty much anywhere - provided you have neighbourhood approval - and don't need to do too much to maintain. One example of this is the Beehaus, which is very light and is well designed to please the little insect swarm too. Starter packs are available from many outdoor hobby retailers.

For doing things on the cheap there's also the chance to get plans for a simple hive from the internet, for example on BBC's Springwatch site, and then trusting in your local wild bees to have good taste when choosing a new abode. Spreading some beeswax on the inside of your potential house is a top tip.

Beginner Advice

By Sarah Franks

I was recently asked by a friend about how to start running. As a beginner he felt the best thing he could do was to simply head out and run until completely exhausted. This is not a good idea, setting a proper pace is very important. It might appear quite simple nonetheless, especially for earlier tries at extended distances, choosing how quickly or slow to run might be a touch confusing. Especially if you consider that changing your pace by a few seconds may mean minutes to your goal time and starting off too quickly can totally wreck your complete run. For any distance runner speed is almost everything.

I usually enjoy training with someone. I recall once I went running together with my wife. At this specific time period, she was superior and much more relaxed at a speed that's a little faster than me, even though I became much better at distances later on, the lady could out-pace me each and every time. Mainly because our exercising pace was different we didn't run with each other until finally I got quicker. The point is you need to run in the pace which is best for you. The magic is choosing the right speed.

On the whole you want to complete your long runs at a pace that sets you in the desired finish time for whatever occurrence you might be training for; or at a slightly slower speed than race pace. Decide your goal time and work backward from there. I don't advocate working on speed and distance at the same time. Split these in a couple of workout routines. Speed work is a different animal which is trained for in a different way when compared with endurance; also it gives your schedule some change that will keep it from getting stale.

I dislike conversing with anyone when I run. There is yet another generally held concept to help you gauge your speed. If you can't speak a couple of sentences easily, likelihood is your working way too hard. It can appear funny with no somebody along therefore prepare yourself to get honked at. Should you get winded speaking then scale back your running until you are able to adequately speak.

You shouldn't be scared to take walk breaks should you be focusing on an objective time frame. It usually is easier to cycle these out than intensify in velocity. Test out the two approaches and apply what is the most effective to your program.

Why Is My Dog Vomiting

By Jerry Welsh

Animals are seen vomiting every now and then. Vomiting is more common in dogs than in other animals. This is why dog owners would not be too concerned if the pet is seen vomiting as in most cases after throwing up, the put would be its usual energetic self. Pet parents would be disgusted if the pet is seen eating the vomit.

Vomiting is not a disease - it is an indication that something wrong is going on in the dog's body. Recurring vomiting can lead to life threatening dehydration thus owners have to be concerned if the pet is vomiting repeatedly. We know dogs to have voracious appetites and to be indiscriminate eaters. Eating spoiled food would result to stomach upset that will make the pet vomit. The introduction of a new diet can make the dog vomit. Usually, vomiting that result from the dog's dietary indiscretion is self limiting.

Some situations that cause the dog to vomit would have life threatening results. Projectile vomiting can be an indication that the pet has swallowed an object that is creating a blockage. To remove the offending foreign object the pet would repeatedly retch until it vomits. Chronic vomiting can be an indication of infection or parasite infestation. One of the internal parasites that would cause the dog to vomit is roundworm. Vomiting can be caused by gastritis or by more serious health conditions like stomach cancer, pancreatitis or kidney diseases.

If the pet's vomit is frothy or foamy, it is possible that the dog is throwing up vile. This condition is common in dogs that grow very fast. The food eaten at night is not sufficient for the needs of the growing body thus the dogs would go hungry at night and vomit frothy vile in the morning. On the other hand, a foamy vomit can be due to a more serious condition - poisoning. The dog may have ingested a poisonous substance.

To be able to help the pet, the owner of the vomiting dog has to know the reasons why the dog is vomiting. The same with diarrhea, the vomiting pet is not given food for 12 to 24 hours to rest the stomach and also to allow the pet to regulate its digestive system. Repeated vomiting can cause dehydration thus a pet parent needs to stop the pet from throwing up. It would be necessary to get the pet to the vets for immediate management of the condition. To stop the pet from vomiting, the pet is usually given antiemetic medications. The history of the pet will be taken to establish the cause for the dog's vomiting.

Reasons Why Dogs are Wagging Their Tails

By Jerry Welsh

Have you ever thought why dogs have the habit of enthusiastically wagging their tails? Dogs do not have the ability to talk but with they can easily convey their affection and whatever they want to convey to their human friends by using various body movements. The wagging of the tail is one very effective way of showing their happiness. Dogs are noted for their friendly personality and this kind of behavior is typified by the enthusiastically wagging tail. The bond that is formed between a kid and a dog is legendary. Not all dogs would be friendly when approached by a stranger but dogs commonly wag their tails when they see a kid.

The wagging of the tail is explained by animal behaviorists as the dog's effort to communicate with other dogs, with other animals and with humans. Dogs don't talk, dogs don't have hands but they can communicate by using various parts of the body. For a dog, the tail is the most effective communication tool. Similar to the wave of the hand, dogs standing at a distance from each other would wag their tails. Just like humans that shake each others hand, dogs would wag the tail to greet each other.

The different ways dogs wag their tails indicates different emotional conditions. A tail that is raised high with only the tip wagging stiffly is an indication of aggression. Dogs wagging the tail this way may attack. Dogs are generally fighters - some are even known to be very ferocious but some breeds have nervous personalities. The nervous personality will be apparent by the tail that is held between the legs and wagged ever so slow.

Aside from being a form of communication, the to and fro movements of the tail is theorized by dog experts as an indication of submission. The same with the wolf ancestors, dogs are also pack animals. In a pack of dogs, it would be easy to see who is the leader of the pack and who are the dogs lower in rank simply by looking at the position of the tail and at the way the tail is wagged. The tail will be held rather low and wagged stiffly by dogs lower in rank. On the other hand, the leader of the pack will hold the tail up proudly and wag it in a very dominant manner.

It pays to know the meaning behind the wagging of the dog's tail to be able to understand the message the pet is trying to convey.
